U.S.Flag Memorial services for former Crosbyton postmaster John M. "Jew" Harkins were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church. Mr. Harkins was 71.

The Rev. Bobby Rine, local Baptist pastor, and the Rev. Dave Treat, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiated.

Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton directed arrangements.

Nephews were pallbearers.

He was claimed by death at 6:30 a.m. Monday in Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, following a prolonged illness.

Mr. Harkins served as postmaster in Crosbyton from 1963 until his retirement on Oct. 31, 1973.

A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Harkins was a former Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) post commander in Crosbyton.

John M. Harkins was born Sept. 16, 1910, in Blooming Grove, Tex. He and the former Macel Jones were married Jan. 19, 1941, in Clovis, NM. Mrs. Harkins preceded her husband in death on Jan. 15, 1979.

Survivors include one son, Bill Harkins of Crane; one daughter, Doris Jean Traylor of Crosbyton; three brothers, Leon D. Harkins, Richard Harkins, and Ralls Harkins, all of Lubbock; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Brints of Crane and Mrs. Lela Lott of Pismo Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Mickey Traylor, Misty Traylor, Brantley Harkins and Jason Harkins.
