Elder S. B. Gowens of Lubbock was buried Sunday afternoon in Crosbyton Cemetery following memorial services at 2 p.m. that day in the Primitive Baptist Church in Lubbock.

He died at 3:30 a.m. Friday in South Park Hospital, Lubbock, after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Gowens was ordained by the Primitive Baptist Church on Jan. 29, 1955.

He and the former Minnie Bass were married Dec. 7, 1929.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Elder Bernard Gowens of Friona, Norman Gowens of China Springs, Elder Clifford Gowens of Wylie and Jimmy Gowens of Lubbock, two daughters, Mrs. Gwendolyn Gentry of Lamesa and Mrs. Geraldine Gentry of Floyd County; a sister; 18 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Minnie Gowens
Funeral services for Minnie Belle Gowens, 100, of Floydada and formerly of Lubbock will be conducted at 1p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2003, at the Primitive Baptist Church in Lubbock with Elders Cleveland Bass, Michael Gowens and George Johnson officiating. Burial will be at the Crosbyton Cemetery with Elders Ronnie Hedges and George Johnson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Resthaven Funeral Home of Lubbock.

Mrs. Gowens passed away Dec. 7, 2003, at the Floydada Rehab and Care Center in Floydada. She was born to Henry and Mary Bass on Dec. 17, 1902 in Hopkins County, Texas. She married Sylvester Gowens on Dec. 7, 1929 in Crosby County.They moved to Lubbock County from Crosby County in 1948 where her husband was a minister. Two of her sons and grandson are also ministers today.

She is preceded in death by her husband ,Sylvester, on Aug. 3, 1984 and also six brothers and five sisters. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lubbock Primitive Baptist Church.

She is survived by four sons, Bernard and wife, Lynn Gowens of Friona, Norman and wife, Tippy Gowens of Waco, Clifford and wife, Lenora Gowens of Wylie and Jimmie and wife, Sandi Gowens of New Deal; two daughters, Gwendolyn and husband, Richard Gentry of Lamesa and Geraldine and husband, Travis Gentry of Floydada; a brother, Harvey and wife, Marie Bass of Muleshoe; 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and Minnie's first great-great granddaughter is expected this month. The family will greet friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at Resthaven Funeral Home.
