Jerry Gentry Services for Jerry Gentry, 68, of Lubbock will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at New Home Baptist Church, with Calvin Gray and Les Griffin officiating. Graveside services and burial will be at 3 p.m. at the Crosbyton Cemetery.

He died Saturday, August 1, 2009 in a Lubbock Hospital.

He was born Nov. 15, 1940, in Posey to Wesley and Willie B. Gentry. He married Ella Mae Cage on June 1, 1962 in Floydada. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lisa Gentry of Crosbyton and Pamela Welch and husband David of Milton, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Daniel and Alissa Welch; three brothers, Richard and wife Gwen of Lamesa, Travis and wife Geraldine of Floydada, Tom and wife Gloria of Southland.

Jerry graduated from Slaton High School and attended Wayland Baptist University. He graduated from Texas Tech University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He taught school 22 years in Slaton and Crosbyton before entering ministry in 1987. He served Highland Baptist Church, Denton, First Baptist Church, Big Spring, and pastored Woodrow Baptist Church, Lubbock 15 years.

During his teaching career he received several recognitions - Teacher of the Year, John H. Lovelady Lifetime for Youth Award, Outstanding Advisor and Retiring Advisor Region 17 TFTA. He loved working with young people and inspiring them to be all they could be. Many students referred to him affectionately as "Big Boy", and "Mr. G".
