Alonzo Amos Fowler Family History in Crosby County History Book
"Rev. T.M. Johnson of Wellington Preaches Funeral; Many Relatives Survive Aged Pioneer.Friends and relatives of Alonzo A. Fowler were saddened as news reached them of his death Friday, March 25 at 5:45 p.m.
Mr. Fowler had suffered intensely since January and as the day waned the hand that guides the universe saw fit to beckon him across the vale of shadows where there is no pain and suffering. Funeral services were conducted at the home in the Big Four community north of Crosbyton by Rev. T.M. Johnston of Wellington, former pastor of Crosbyton Methodist church and a favored friend of Mr. Fowler. In accordance with his last request the remains were not laid to rest until Tuesday at 2 p.m., following his death on Friday.
He was buried in the Crosbyton cemetery with A.A. Hachell, undertaker, in charge. Pall bearers were Sep Smith, Joe Parks, H.T. Snider, M.A. Reynolds, R.E. Kerr, E.A. Watson, H.C. Edler, W.H. Hames, and Edgar Allen.
A.A. Fowler was born in St. Lawrence county, New York, May 12, 1851 and was the fifth child of Amos and Polly (Walker) Fowler who had five sons and two daughters all of whom are now gone. A brother, E.W. Fowler, of Arcadia, Nebraska preceded him in death only a month ago.
Mr. Fowler was married to Amelia Durham and to this union were born three children, two of whom survive: E.A. Fowler of Bailey county and C.H. Fowler of Fallon, Nevada. They moved to Nebraska in 1878 where Mrs. Fowler died. In 1883 Mr. Fowler was united in marriage to Mary E. Parker, a native of Ohio and daughter of Jeremiah and Orphie (Finlaw) Parker. To this union were born nine children all of whom survive.
Mr. Fowler has resided in Crosby county since February 1914 and was widely known and respected for his honesty and integrity. Though his education was meager he was a self-made man and a success thru sheer force of energy and will power. In spite of his 81 years he was unusually agile and was actively engaged about his farm until his foot became so afflicted he could no longer walk.
Though he is no longer with us in person he will live on in our hearts a cherished memory. His magnetic personality may be attributed to his always cheerful disposition and sunshine in his heart that could pierce the darkest cloud of despair. He was a staunch friend, a kind father and devoted husband. He leaves a devoted wife, 11 children, 87 grandchildren, and 32 great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn his death.
The children are E.A. Fowler of Baileyboro, Texas, C.H. Fowler of Fallon, Nevada; Frank Fowler, Greenville, N.M.; Mrs. John Tucker, Mrs. C.C. Smith, Mrs.W.L. Parker, J.A., Orrie, Glenford, Ralph, and Arnal all of Crosbyton.
