Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Walter Joe Farris this evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Monterey Baptist Church with committal services following at 2 p.m. in the Crosbyton Cemetery. Our beloved "Papa Joe" went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 10, 2011.
Joe was born on July 2, 1930 to Sampson and Miriam (Norwood) Farris in Austin. He grew up in Llano County and graduated from Gatesville High School. Following graduation he worked for the Texas Highway Department as a Surveyor. Joe served his country as a MP in the US Army. On January 30, 1953 he married Herma Loy Reed in Crosbyton. While in Crosbyton, he was a member of First Baptist Church where he was ordained a deacon in 1959. He owned Joe's Auto Supply. Moving to Lubbock in 1977, he was a member of Monterey Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and a trustee. He was a co-owner of Farris Equipment Sales. Joe enjoyed playing dominos and was a member of the South Plains Antique Tractor Association. The greatest passion of Joe's life was spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ben Farris; and an infant grandson.
Joe is survived by his wife of 58 years, Herma Loy; a son, Sam Farris and wife Angela, three daughters, Jodie Stone and Jeannie Farris all of Lubbock and Janice Legan and husband Brian of Sundown; six grandchildren, Aaron Stone and wife Jeanne, Evan Stone, Shannon Farris, Justin Farris, Jenna Legan and Brice Legan; two great-granddaughters, Lynlee and Rylan Stone; a sister, Ina Davis and husband Knox of Burnet; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Our family would like to thank Dr. Sammy Deeb, Dr. Rodolfo Martinez, Susan Harlan, BSN, and her staff on Covenant's South 7th floor and his other care givers for caring for our dad in such a compassionate way.
Memorials are suggested to the Monterey Baptist Church Building Fund, 3601 50th St., Lubbock, Tx 79413 or the Texas Boys Ranch, P.O. Box 5665, Lubbock, Tx 79408.
