School, Church Worker Claimed R.C. Ellison Rites Held Saturday

Robert Ellison Photograph A longtime worker in Crosbyton public school and church affairs died at 12:25 a.m. Friday in his home here. R.C. Ellison, 78, had been critically ill for several weeks.

Final rites were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Crosbyton Church of Christ, Thomas Compon, minister, and Carl Maples, Broken Arrow, Okla., officiated.

Robert Council Ellison was born in Sommerville, Ga., during 1882. The family moved to Erath county in 1894.

He married Clara Gertrude Brasell, October 30, 1904. Mr. and Mrs. Ellison moved to Crosby County in 1922 and he farmed here until his retirement in 1946.

Ellison served for 16 years on Crosbyton school board during a period stretching through the "Thirties". During his tenure, the two buildings in center and south part of the schoolground were constructed.

"He was a mighty good trustee", recalls D.A. Edwards, who was Crosbyton superintendent during that period. "He took an active interest in school affairs and tried to do what was right."

A worker in the Church of Christ, Ellison was baptized in 1907. He served as an elder in the Crosbyton Church for a quarter of a century.

Ellison also served terms on the Crosbyton hospital board and the Co-Op Gin board. He assisted in the development of the city by opening the now populous College Heights addition along Ivy Street.

Survivors include the wife, Gertrude, of the home; four daughters, Mrs. Irene Dendy and Mrs. W. W. Robertson, both of Crosbyton, Mrs. D. K. Stevens, Ralls, and Mrs. Raymond Tillson, Amarillo; six sons, Duward, Ernest, Lonnie and Keith, all of Crosbyton, Homer, Ralls, and R. C. Jr., New Deal; one sister, Mrs. Sol Yardley, Stephenville; three brothers, A.D. Ellison, Ralls, Al, Portales, and John, Stephenville; 31 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ross Cash, Joe Bailey, Allan Mize, Elddred Mize, Billy Bob Wright, C.A. Verett and Leonard Parker.

Burial was in Crosbyton cemetery. King Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
