Henry Ellison

photoHenry I. Ellison, 92, passed away peacefully at the Carillon House on May 29, 2010 after a brief illness. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at the Lakeridge United Methodist Church, in Lubbock with Rev. Dean Bradley of Dublin and Rev. John Burk of Lubbock officiating. Interment will follow the service at 4 p.m. in the Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls. Visitation will this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Lakeridge United Methodist Church and 1 p.m. until service time on Tuesday.

Henry was born Nov. 28, 1917 in Crosbyton to Mack Henry and Elizabeth (Irwin) Ellison. He was the grandson of Abraham Lincoln and Rachel (Edwards) Ellison, early pioneers of Crosbyton, Crosby County, Texas. Mr. Ellison attended schools in Crosbyton. He married Mary Ella Hancock from the Purves Community, Erath County, Texas on Aug. 4, 1940.

Henry had an enterprising spirit. He grew peanuts in Erath County until 1954, sold peanuts for Tom's Peanuts in Crosby County and owned and operated Crosbyton Auto Parts and Plains Food in Crosbyton. In 1960, Henry and Mary built and operated a grocery store on the Lockney Hwy. in Floydada. Henry had a passion for real estate. After moving to Lubbock, he obtained his real estate license and worked for Malcomb Garrett for several years before becoming a broker and owner of Ellison and Scott Realtors.

Another passion of his was the Lions Club. Henry was a longtime member of the Lions Club, serving the Lubbock Downtown Lions Club for 38 years. He was responsible for the addition of 21 members. Henry was a longtime member of the Methodist Church and was a current member of the Lakeridge United Methodist Church. The Heart Pillow Ministry was started by Kathy and Harold Massey after Mr. Ellison suffered a heart attack in the Rio Grande Valley in 2001.

Henry was an encourager to everyone. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have benefitted for years from Henry's wisdom and encouragement.

Mourning the loss of Mr. Ellison, but thankful for his life well spent, are his wife of almost 70 years, Mary; daughters, Sandra Witt and husband George and Kathy Massey and husband Harold of Lubbock; nine grandchildren, Sherri Wheeler, Suzy (John) Davis, Shelly (Alan) Pitts, Stacy (Neil) Prather, Micki (Bart) Woodman, Darrin (Denice) Scott, Amy (Mike) Manchee, Roger (Rhonda) Massey and Johnny Massey; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and a sister, Modie Phillips and husband Bill of Lubbock.

Henry was preceded in death by a son, Terry Dean Ellison; brothers, Frank, Edwin and Donald Ellison; and a grandson, Roger Massey.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Darrin Scott, John Davis, Bart Woodman, Neil Prather, Mike Manchee and Alan Pitts. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Downtown Lions Club.

A special thanks to Dr. Robert Johnson and Kim and the nurses with Vista Care for their excellent care of and concern for Mr. Ellison.

The family suggests memorials be made to Lakeridge United Methodist Chapel Building Fund, 4701 82nd St. Lubbock, Texas 79424.
