Biography

John Allen Dunn was born February 1, 1901 in Caradan, Mills County, Texas. He moved to Crosbyton in 1919 with his father, Elder T. A. Dunn and family.

Olyen Irene Ellison was born September 2, 1905 in Seymour, Baylor County, Texas. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cap Ellison. They moved to Crosbyton in 1909.

The courtship of John Allen and Irene began in the early 20´s, back in the horse and buggy days. They were married December 20, 1922 in the Baptist church of Crosbyton by Rev. B. N Shepherd.

They lived on the farm eight years, after which John Allen began working at various stores in Crosbyton such as Mabes Variety Store, Hibbitts Grocery, Plains Mercantile Company and J. O. Matthews Department Store.

January 1, 1931 they moved to Gila, New Mexico along with the John D. McDermett family, in order to work for Julian M. Bassett, ranching. After living there several months, they returned to Crosbyton where John Allen was an employee at T. George Dry Goods.

As time elapsed, they moved to Fort Worth and while living there, on May 9, 1933, a daughter was born, who was named Barbara Allen, for her father, also a favorite song titled "Barbara Allen." After leaving their families back in Crosbyton, they became homesick, therefore, they returned home.

Barbara Allen started to school in first grade in Crosbyton in 1939. Her teacher, Miss Eula Whitaker taught her two years.

July, 1941, the Dunns moved to Clovis, New Mexico, where John Allen accepted a position with the C. R. Anthony Company. Irene worked at the Clovis Army Air Base. Other employment was helping her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cap Ellison, operate the Rogers Trading Post at Rogers, New Mexico. After 11 months working there, her father sold the store, and they moved to Littlefield, Texas, where John Allen was assistant Manager of Rutherford Department Store. They also helped close out the Rutherford store in Portales, New Mexico in 1949.

Irene is the oldest of four children born to Mr. and Mrs. Cap Ellis. Her two brothers were Wilbert and Eldred. Her sister is Norvelle. They all married on December 20 in different years. She is also the oldest grandchild of the B. W. "Uncle Ben" Ellison family, who were among the first pioneer families of Crosbyton.

Barbara Allen, daughter of John Allen and Irene Dunn, finished high school in 1950 at Littlefield. She enrolled in West Texas State at Canyon where she received her degree in English and speech. She met and married Billy Daniel Rogers from Tulia, Texas, August 24, 1954 at the Baptist parsonage in Canyon, Texas. Rev. Strauss Atchinson performing the ceremony, after which the bridegroom sang to the bride "Until". They taught school two terms at Olton and Hart, and later moved to Amarillo. Three children were born to Bill and Barbara Rogers; Rebecca Lyn, October 19, 1956; Brad Daniel, February 15, 1960; and Brenda Leigh, May 12, 1961. Since February 1, 1971, the Bill Rogers family have made their home in Atlanta, Georgia, where Bill is Regional Manager for Franklin Laboratories of the 11 southwestern states. Barbara Allen teaches in the public school system in Atlanta.

The teenage children are very active in the summer months, working at various jobs at Six Flags Over Georgia, and participating in school activities during fall and winter months.

John Allen Dunn retired from Hammons Clothing Store in Hereford, Texas, June 12, 1974. After being away 34 years, they returned to Crosbyton September 17, 1974 to make their home. They are active in the Baptist church where they have membership.

Irene Dunn died July 28, 1977 and is buried in Crosbyton Cemetery.

Mrs. Irene Dunn was pronounced dead on arrival at Crosbyton Clinic Hospital about 10:15 p.m. Thursday. She became ill at her home, 530 South Crosby, and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance.

Mrs. Dunn was 71.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church. The Rev. Bobby Rine, pastor, officiated.

Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of Adams Funeral Home.

The former Irene Elison was born Sept. 2, 1905 in Seymour. She came to Crosbyton in 1909 with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Cap Ellison, and grew up in this community. The Cap Ellison family were early Crosby County settlers.

Irene Ellison grew up in this community. She and John Allen Dunn were married Dec.20, 1923 in Crosbyton.

The Dunns returned to Crosbyton to make their home in 1974. They also had resided in Hereford, Lubbock, Littlefield, Lockney and Fort Worth, Tex., Portales, Clovis, and Rogers, N.M.

The deceased was a member of First Baptist Church in Crosbyton.

She had been employed for the last two years at the Harvey School Store. At one time, Mrs. Dunn was a dealer and unit manager for Stanley Home Products in Littlefield.

Survivors include her husband, Jon Allen Dunn of Crosbyton; one daughter Mrs. Bill (Barbara) Rogers of Atlanta, GA; one brother, Eldred (Jimmie) Ellison of Andrews; one sister, Mrs. Roy (Norvelle) Hoggard of Big Spring; her stepmother, Mrs. Cap Ellison of Clovis, N.M.; and three grandchildren, Becky, Brad and Brenda Rogers, all of Atlanta, GA.

Also among survivors are one uncle, Lige Ellison, Crosbyton; four aunts, Mrs. Mode Reed and Mrs. John Harvey, Crosbyton; Mrs. Viola Gray, Hereford; and Mrs. Belle McDermitt, Midland and several nieces and nephews.

Out-of-town guests registered for the funeral from Maryland, Georgia, New Mexico and the following Texas towns: Friona, Lubbock, Floydada, Midland, Houston, Amarillo, Andrews, Big Spring, Panhandle, Tulia, Hereford and Brownfield.

Memorial services for John Allen Dunn of Smyrna, Ga., and formerly of Crosbyton were at 3 p.m. last Thursday in First Baptist Church here. The Rev. Bobby Rine, pastor, and Elder Afton Richards of Ralls officiated.

Burial was made in Crosbyton Cemetery beside the grave of his wife. Adams Funeral Home directed arrangements.

Mr. Dunn, 78, died about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Smyrna Hospital (Smyrna, Ga.) following a lengthy illness.

Dunn moved to Georgia from Crosbyton following the July 28, 1977 death of his wife. He and the former Olyen Irene Ellison, daughter of early settlers Mr. and Mrs. Cap Ellison, were married Dec. 20, 1922 in Crosbyton First Baptist Church.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Dunn was a salesman in men´s clothing stores around this area and in New Mexico. He was a member of King Springs Baptist Church in Georgia and formerly was a deacon in the Baptist Church.

John Allen Dunn was born Feb. 1, 1901 at Caradan (Mills County), one of seven children of the late T.A. and Eunice Melinda Dunn. The family moved from Killeen to the Plains in 1909, making their home in Tulia before purchasing a farm from John F. Roberts and moving to Mt. Blanco Community. John Allen attended the Mt. Blanco School.

Elder Tommy Dunn, father of the deceased moved to Crosbyton in 1919 and founded the Primitive Baptist Church. He served the church as pastor 32 years.

Following their marriage, the John Allen Dunns lived on a farm eight years before he worked at Mabe´s Variety Store, Hibbits Grocery, Plains Mercantile Co. and J.O. Matthews Department Store in Crosbyton.

They moved Jan. 1, 1931 to Gila, N.M., to work for rancher Julian M. Bassett. The family returned to Crosbyton several months later and he was employed by T. George Dry Goods.

The Dunns formerly resided in Fort Worth, Littlefield, Hereford, as well as Clovis, Portales, and other New Mexico towns. After being away from Crosbyton 34 years, they returned here Sept. 17, 1974.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Bill (Barbara) Rogers of Smyrna, Ga.; four sisters, Mrs. Tillman Reeves of Crosbyton, Mrs. E. L. Roberts, Mrs. Ernest Robertson and Mrs. Griffin Odom, all of Lubbock; and three grandchildren, Brad Becky and Brenda Rogers, all of Smyrna, Ga.
