Biography

Fannin Monroe Dunn was born at Point, Rains Co., TX, Sept. 27, 1893, the son of Martha Virginia (Lynn) and James Oscar Dunn who came from Alabama and Georgia respectively. He attended public schools in Rains County then went to Tyler Commercial College in Tyler. He left school to accept a position in First State Bank of Point in April, 1914.

On Aug. 15, 1914 Fannin was married to Montgomery Ann Irvin who was born in Hutchins, Dallas Co., the daughter of Charles Irwin and Sarah Brightwell. Her family migrated to Texas from Tennessee. To this union three children were born. Hazel Dell and Monroe Irvin, born in Point, and Jimmy Charles, born after the family moved to West Texas. Monroe served as a pilot instructor in World War II and retired with the rank of captain.

In October, 1925, Fannin resigned his job with the Point bank and moved with his family to Ralls, where he supervised the Crosby Co. farming and ginning interests of Montogermy Brothers of Point. Three months later he was employed by S.A. Guy of Crosbyton, who at that time operated a large dairy and poultry business just north of the city. In 1928 he again entered the banking business, First National Bank of Crosbyton, and later Citizens National Bank of Crosbyton, where he stayed until he established Citizens Insurance Agency, presently owned and operated by his son, Jimmy Charles.

Fannin was active in civic affairs, serving as city councilman and mayor for three terms. He was at one time administrator of Crosbyton Clinic and Hospital and was serving as chairman of the board of directors of that institution at the time of his death, Oct. 25, 1974 at age 81. He was an active member of First Baptist Church, serving as church clerk for many years. In 1966 Fannin received a special honor, the distinction of being named, "Citizen Throughout the Years", awarded him by the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce.

On Aug. 15, 1974 the Dunns celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Hazel Dell, who married R. L. Elms of Crosbyton, presently resides in Lubbock. Monroe, who married Guida Wilson of Alpine, lives in Midland and Jimmy Charles, who married Mary Whisenant of Denton, lives in Crosbyton.

Obituary

Crosbyton has lost one of its most respected citizens.

F.M. Dunn, a former mayor and a civic leader for almost half a century, succumbed about 10 a.m. Friday in Methodist Hospital in Lubbock at the age of 81.

He had undergone surgery Thursday to set a hip which was broken in a fall the previous Sunday.

Cited in 1966 as Crosbyton"s "Citizen Through the Years," Mr. Dunn had been in failing health for several months.

Memorial rites were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church, where Mr. Dunn was church clerk and held numerous other positions. The Rev. R. C. Tennison of Brownwood, a former local pastor, and the Rev. Bobby Rine, present pastor, conducted the service.

Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery, under direction of King Funeral Home.

F.M. Dunn had served Crosbyton as mayor and as a city councilman for three terms.

While serving as administrator of Crosbyton Clinic Hospital, he is credited by present hospital administrator T.J. Taylor, as the man responsible for "getting the hospital in the black." He assumed the position in 1948. Taylor believes that Dunn´s foresight in setting up hospital policy and operational procedure was responsible for the hospital´s ability to "pay its own way" over the years. At the time of his death, Mr. Dunn served as chairman of the Crosbyton Clinic Hospital board.

A retired insurance and real estate businessman, Dunn was associated with Citizens National Bank before founding his own insurance firm. This business, Citizens Insurance Agency, is now owned by a son, Jimmy Dunn. Recognized as an astute businessman, F.M. Dunn was also keenly interested in agriculture.

Born Sept. 27, 1893, in Point, F.M. Dunn was married to the former Joe Ann Irwin Aug. 15, 1914.

The family moved to Crosbyton in 1926.
