  Services for Alvah Eugene "Gene": Coward of Seagraves were at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Seagraves First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Satterwhite officiating. Graveside services followed at 3 p.m. in Crosbyton Cemetery.

The 65-year-old Coward died Friday in the Veterans´ Administration Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M., after a lengthy illness.

A Bell County native, Mr. Coward was a former Crosby County resident.

He was active in church and civic activities at Seagraves. Coward, who served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, was a longtime member of the Baptist Church, a former director of the Lions Club, a former commander of the Seagraves American Legion post, and a past president of the Quarterback Club.

He and the former Alleen Freeman were married in 1935. She died in February 1946. Mr. Coward and Margaret Bandy were married Nov. 28, 1946 in Seagraves.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, the Rev. Jack E. Coward of Webster, S.D., Bill G. Coward of North Richard Hills and Daniel Coward of Floydada; a daughter, Mrs. Leslie (Sue) Thompson of Nacogdoches; two brothers, B.E. Coward and A.B. Coward, both of Lubbock; a sister, Mrs. C.A. Boothe of Amarillo; and six grandchildren.

He was a nephew of Mrs. A.J. Coward of Crosbyton.
