Crosbyton Mourns Death of Jake Carter, 40, Civic and Church Leader

U.S.Flag   Crosbyton mourned the death this week of one of is ablest citizens, as funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church for James William (Jake) Carter, 40.

Mr. Carter, International Harvester dealer, prominent civic leader, church worker, and a leader in charitable work, died unexpectedly about 1 p.m. Sunday of a heart attack. He had attended Sunday school and church services Sunday morning. Saturday he had been elected trustee-at-large of the Crosbyton County Board of School trustees, and on Tuesday, the day of his funeral, he was re-elected to his fourth term as alderman on the Crosbyton City Council.

Rev. Carl Grissom, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiated at the services Tuesday. He was assisted by Dr. Joe McClain, Seagraves, and Rev. J.F. Mathews, Lubbock. Burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery under direction of King Funeral Home.

Born September 8, 1913, Mr. Carter had spent all his life in Crosbyton with the exception of time spent in the Army during World War Two. He attended New Mexico Military Institute at Roswell, N. Mex., and graduated from Crosbyton High School in 1931.

He came from a pioneer Crosby county family. His grandfather, Dr. J.W. Carter, for whom he was named, settled at Old Emma in the early days of that Community. His father, Mr. R.S.M. Carter, first went into business at Emma, later moving to Crosbyton where he retained the name, Emma Hardware Co., until his retirement a few years ago.

Mr. Carter had held many civic offices, both before and at the time of his death. He was a member of the old City Commission during the years when the city not only paid off debts incurred during World War II but also greatly expanded the utilities departments of the city. He was a former president of the Crosbyton Lions Club, and a former director of the Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce. He was selected as the "Best Citizen of 1952," by the latter organization, due to his work for the community. At one time he was a member of the Crosbyton Fire Department. He was active in church work and served for a number of years as secretary-treasurer of the First Baptist Church. He was a benefactor of Boys Ranch near Amarillo, and had assisted in getting several Crosbyton boys accepted at the Ranch. He took an active lead in many charitable drives conducted in the city.

Survivors include his wife, Nelle; a son, Roy Stanley, 6, and a daughter, Vicki, 11, all of Crosbyton; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. M. Carter, also of Crosbyton; and six sisters, Mrs. Elmer Reed, Mrs. Pete Parks and Mrs. Bill Blackwood, all of Lubbock, Mrs. J.P. Hackley and Mrs. Odie Karr, both of Amarilo, and Mrs. Fabian Lemley of Crosbyton.
