Biography

Cecil Walker Berry was born in Hill Co., TX March 25, 1907, to Thomas C. and Maude BERRY. He married Irene HENDERSON in Jan. 1930. He moved to Eagle Pass and was employed in bridge construction across the Rio Grande. While in Eagle Pass, his oldest daughter, Helen Marie was born July 2, 1931. He moved back to Hill Co. prior to 1935 and his migration to West Texas and Crosby Co. Two sons were born to Cecil and Irene while living in Hill Co. Donald Henderson BERRY was born Jan. 23, 1933. Thomas Edgar BERRY was born Mar. 21, 1934. Cecil BERRY came to Crosby Co. early in 1935 where a daughter, Frances was born on March 21, 1935. He was employed by the WPA for awhile in road construction and went to work for Clayton W. HASH, Sr. A third son and fifth child, James Robert, was born May 26, 1936. Cecil went to work for Crosby Co. as a maintainer operator in 1936 and continued to work for Crosby Co. until his death Jan. 21, 1971. The following story is told as to why Cecil BERRY began work for Crosby Co. Clayton W. HASH came to Cecil one day in 1936 and told Cecil that he could no longer use him as a hand, but that Ernest SMITH, Commissioner, precinct #2, Crosby County needed a maintainer operator and that he paid more money than he could "afford to pay".

Cecil worked ten years for Crosby Co. as a machine operator before Mr. HASH and several other good friends talked him into running for Commissioner, Precinct #2 in 1946. He won this election and served three terms through 1952. In 1954 he announced for Crosby County Judge and won his election and all other elections for County Judge including the election of 1970. He died on Jan. 21, 1971, just after taking office as County Judge for another four-year term. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Helen Marie Berry BOND in Sept. 1968.

Donald Henderson (Donnie) BERRY married Margaret Ann HARRIS Jan. 3, 1954 and they have three children.

Thomas Edgar "Pat" BERRY married Mary Beth LITTLEFIELD May 4, 1958. Mary Beth is the only daughter of John Marlin Olen LITTLEFIELD and Mittie Estelle Sherwood LITTLEFIELD. Pat and Mary live in Crosbyton and have three children.

Frances BERRY married Arthur COPELAND and lives in Tipton, OK. Frances and Arthur have one daughter.

James Robert BERRY married Patsy PHARES and lives in Farwell, TX. They have three daughters.

Cecil W. BERRY was a member of Pansy Baptist Church at Broadway. He was a Master Mason and a member of Crosbyton Lodge #1020 AF and AM. Cecil was also a member of Crosbyton Chamber of Commerce and active in many civic activities. He was a strict disciplinarian and as County Judge was very interested in the welfare and well being of all the youth of his community. Besides his other activities, Cecil and Irene operated a grocery store at Broadway from 1941 to 1954. Cecil and Irene´s children are: Helen Marie, Donald H. Thomas (Pat), Frances, James R. Cecil G., Betty Irene, Marshall.
