Biography

ROLLIN

Rollin Francis Artley was the son of Ransom and Roxanna Artley. He was born in Pennsdale, PA on Nov. 28, 1895. As a lad he moved with his family to Haven KS.

Rollin came to Crosby County by rail in 1915 to help his brother, Charlie, with the farm his parents had bought. His parents had rented a box car, in which they put two teams in one end and household goods in the other. Rollin and Charlie got the land all broke out and started their crops.

Along came World War I and Rollin was called to service. He returned to Kansas and joined friends from Kansas in the army. He was a corporal and served in Germany and France.

After his discharge, he returned to Crosby County. While visiting his aunt, uncle, and cousins, the Edlers, he met Lillian Hames, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Hames. They married Dec. 17, 1922.

Rollin and Lillian moved to Bailey County early in 1924 and farmed two crop years, then returned to the Artley farm in Nov. 1925, where they made their home and raised their family.

Rollin went from farming with a team to a tractor with two row equipment and then to four row. He always had cows, pigs, and chickens. for many years they raised goats. Lillian churned butter, molded and wrapped it. Butter and eggs helped to get them through the depression.

Rollin and Lillian had two daughters, Alice Marie was born Dec. 6, 1927 at the family home and Mary Fayma Dec. 24, 1930.

Rollin served on the boards of directors of the first Crosby County Fuel organized, Crosbyton Cooperative Gin and Crosbyton Cooperative Grain Co.

During World War II, he joined the State Guard, which was organized in 1940. He was a staff sergeant.

Their daughters graduated from Crosbyton High School. Alice married Gene Greene and they had three children, Loyd, Barbara and Joe. Fayma married Bill Crump and they had three children, Colene, Wayne, and Lelon.

Rollins´s interests were his work and his family. He took a lot of interest in his grandchildren. He continued to farm until 1969 when he rented the land to his son-in-law, Gene Greene. Even then he liked to continue helping with the farm work, until his death Aug. 20, 1971. He is buried in Crosbyton Cemetery.
