Co. I, 4th Regiment. Missouri. Cavalry No listing to dateJohn C. Sawyers was born November 11, 1843, in Lincoln County, Tennessee. He was Seventh in order of birth of nine children born to John S. and Narcissa (Wilson) Sawyers. The father a native of Virginia, born 1796 and the mother of Tennessee, born 1811. Narcissa's parents were Robert and Hannah Wilson. She had a sister, Elizabeth, Brothers, Union A. , Matthew T. and Robert W. Wilson. John C's grandfather was David Sawyers born about 1772 in Rockridge Co., VA. David was son of Capt. James Sawyers, Jr., born November 28, 1748, Augusta Co., VA, Capt. James Sawyers was son of Lieut. James Sawyers. Sr. born 1722 Co. Tyronne, Ireland.
John Calhoun Sawyers came with his father to Texas in 1859 and located in Hill County where he made his home. Texas Census for Hill Co., TX, 1860 list, John 63, Narcissa 52, James 28, Robert 25, Margaret 20, John C. 17, Sidney 13, and David 11. Farming was his principal occupation through life. When the great cloud of war hung darkly over the Nation in 1861 he enlisted in Company A, Parsons Regiment of Cavalry and saw most of his service on the West side of the Mississippi River. His command followed Banks Army down the river, and fighting and skirmishing occurred every day until Banks dropped. John's brothers, James and Robert also enlisted in Company A, Parsons Regiment. After The war John C. returned home and married Isidora (Dora) Cole, daughter of Joseph & Frances Cole, both born in Mississippi.
John C. and wife had 10 children. In 1907 John and wife Dora bought land in Crosby County, Texas and moved there with children, Jennie, Annie, Joseph and Earl. Earl served in World War I in France and upon returning home married Ethel Blassingame, daughter of Robert Franklin and Martha (Calvary) Blassingame, September 2nd. 1919. To this union three children were born: Robert B., Marlin L., and Grace.
John C. died January 31, 1921 and is buried in Cone Cemetery, Crosby County, TX., along with his wife and the four children that came to West Texas with them, along with other family members.
The "s" was dropped from the Sawyers name around the turn of the century.
