Services for Elder Joe Jackson, 78, of Cone were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, 1994, in the New Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Floydada with Rev. E. C. Chron of Carrollton and Elder George Johnson of Idalou officiating.
Burial in Cone Cemetery was under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.
Jackson died at 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, Oct 5, 1994, in the Floydada Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
He was born April 26, 1916, in Milam County. He married Hortense Nance Dec. 19, 1934 east of Cone. He was a member of the New Salem Primitive Baptist Church in Floydada and served as the pastor of the church from October 1962 until 1985. In 1937 he and his father-in-law started Nance & Jackson Blacksmith and Welding Shop in Cone. He served as Precinct 3 Crosby County Commissioner from 1947 to 1950. In 1949 he bought Wheeler Store and named it Jackson Grocery Store and ran it until 1990. In 1958 he was appointed Postmaster of Cone and served until the Post Office closed in April of 1991. He served several terms on the Cone School Board and one term on the Crosby County School Board. He was president of the Cone Cemetery Association from 1972 to present. He served as a Chief Petty Office of the US Navy in WWII. He moved to Crosby County in 1927 from Lamar County then to Cone in 1937.
Survivors include his wife, Hortense Jackson of Cone; a son Carl Jackson and his wife Carolyn of Amarillo; one step-brother Turner Funston of Wichita Falls; one sister, Estelee Doss of Lubbock; one step-sister Aquila Black of Waco; two grandchildren Rhett Jackson of Amarillo and Shanna Blount of Lubbock; and three great grandchildren, Holley Jackson, Alesha Jackson and Jordan Blount.
