Biography

Chad W. Gott was born in Bowling Green, KY., July 19, 1875, moving to Crosby Co. in 1890. Mrs. Gott, nee Mamie M. Kropp, was born at Pilot Point, TX, Feb. 9, 1884, also coming to Crosby Co. area in the year 1890. They were married in January, 1900 - one of the first couples to marry in Crosby Co.

They first lived in a half dugout, somewhere in the Estacado area; "freighting" their supplies twice a year from Lockney. Later they built their home on a farm at Cone. The lumber was hauled from Childress, the nearest railhead at that time. That home still stands and is being used at this time. (1977)

They had three children, all born at Cone. The first, Ruth, born Nov. 14, 1900. The second, Rachel, born July 3, 1902; and a son, Welton C., born Feb. 21, 1912.

Ruth married Roy Hopkins, Nov. 1920, had one child named Johnnie Ruth, born Oct. 23, 1921. Ruth died two weeks later, leaving the baby to be raised by Mr. and Mrs. Gott.

Rachel married Bowie Henry, son of the W.C. Henrys. Two children were born of this union. Bobbie Nell, born Dec.31, 1924 and Billy Max, born Jan. 17, 1930. Their father, Bowie, passed away in 1933.

The only son of Mr. and Mrs. Gott, Welton C., died Sept. 26, 1919, at the age of seven.

Mr. and Mrs. Gott and their grandchild, Johnnie Ruth, moved from Cone to Ralls late in 1921. Gott again built his own home where they resided until Mrs. Gott passed away June 1, 1956. Mr. Gott went to live with his daughter Rachel at Whiteface where he died Jan. 13, 1958. Rachel now lives in Fredericksburg.

The grandchild, Johnnie Ruth, went to school in Ralls, graduating in 1939. Married M.L. "Mac" Tarleton May 22, 1946. They have one child, Jeffrey Lantzwho attended Ralls school, graduating in 1974 and is now attending Texas Tech.

The second grandchild, Bobbie Nell Henry, married Tommie Marlar of Lorenzo. They have two children Donna and Tommie, Jr. Donna married Connie English and they have two children, the youngest one a little boy named Chad, a namesake of his great-great grandfather Chad W. Gott. All live in San Antonio.

The grandson, Billy Max Henry, married Sammie Biddle of Trinity. They are both teaching in Alvin. They have two daughters, Toni and Nicki.

Ralls Services set for Mrs. Mamie Gott

Ralls , June 30 (Special) - Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 3 p.m. for Mrs. Mamie M. Gott, 72, who had lived in and near Ralls about 60 years.

Services will be in the First Methodist Church here with the Rev. Oscar Bruce, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Tommy Allen, pastor of the First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Cone Cemetery under direction of Carter Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gott, who died in her home here about 4 a.m. today, first came to this area in the 1890´s. She and her husband. W. C. (should be C.W.) Gott, lived on a farm about 10 miles north of here before moving into Ralls. Lumber for the Gott farm home was hauled from Childress, the nearest railhead at that time.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Mrs. William (Rachel) Bierman, Whiteface, TX, a sister, Mrs. Lee (Ettie) Allman, Brownfield; three grandchildren, Mrs. Mack (Johnnie Ruth) Tarleton, Ralls; Mrs. T. M. (Bobbie Nell) Marlar, San Antonio; and Bill Henry, Spur, all of whom were raised by Mrs. Gott after the death of their parents; and two great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Albert Clines, Jack Henry, W. C. Henry, Jr., Ellis Henry, Audry Man and John Tarleton.

Pioneer Resident of Ralls Area Dies

Ralls (Special)— Chad Wick Gott, 82, resident of the Ralls area for the past 65 years, died about 11a.m. Sunday at the Phillips-Dupre Hospital in Levelland (TX).

A retired farmer, he had been residing with his daughter in Whiteface recently. He moved to the area from Kentucky at the age of 17.

Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist church of Ralls at 3 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Tommy Allen, pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. G. W. Purser, pastor of the Ralls Bethel Baptist Church, and the Rev. Rufus Kitchen, pastor of the Whiteface (TX) Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Cone Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. William (Rachel) Bierman, Whiteface; three sisters, Mrs. Lisa (should be Leatha) English, Lubbock; Mrs. Connie Caudill, Demming, N.M.; Mrs. Lita Poulson, Alamogordo, N.M.; and three grandchildren. One of the grandchildren, Mrs. Max (Johnnie Ruth Hopkins) Tarleton, was raised by Mr. and Mrs. Gott.

Pallbearers will be Albert Clines, Ralls; W. C. Henry, Jr., Morton; Ellis Henry, Ralls; John Tarleton, Ralls; E. W. Tarleton,Ralls; Deb Payne, Whiteface; Audry May, Crosbyton and Vernie Smith, Ralls.
