Later traded his Boxley, Indiana, sawmill business for 50,000 acres of land in Crosby County, Texas. Came to Texas in 1876, and sold land for $0.25 an acre. By 1879, a Quaker colony was established near the town of Marietta, Texas. Named after Cox's wife, Marietta was re-named Estacado in 1886. By 1893, most of the colonists had left the South Plains. The Kentucky Cattle Company, organized by the Tilford Brothers at Louisville, Kentucky in 1883, started the Two-Buckle Ranch in Blanco Canyon in 1884, with C. M. Tilford as resident manager. At its peak, the ranch was stocked with nearly 14,000 head of cattle and 130 saddle horses and covered over 200 sections of land in Crosby County. The Panic of 1893 caused the Kentucky Cattle Company to go out of business and sell the entire herd. Over the next several years, the ranch was leased and eventually parceled out to various owners. Rancher, land speculator and oilman. Born 1876 in New York. Moved to West Texas in 1882 where his father, Roger M. Bassett, had joined the BS Ranch outside Colorado City, Texas with Harry Smith. In 1908, formed the C. B. Livestock Company with the Coonley brothers of Chicago, Illinois and soon thereafter bought the 2-Buckle Ranch. It was through the course of the development of these ranchlands that Crosbyton, Texas came about. In 1910, built a 39 mile rail line that connected Crosbyton to Lubbock, Texas. In 1915, married the former Cora Drake, the marriage produced four children. Also, developed a 374 sections of rangeland in Terrell County, Texas. The land, bought from Sydney Webb, included the townsite of Dryden and in 1930 moved his family there after suffering heavy losses in Gila, New Mexico as a result of the depression. Lived in various places in Northern Texas and Oklahoma. Eventually settled near Ralls in Crosby County, Texas. Later moved to Lamb County, Texas, near Sudan. Began keeping his diary on March 28, 1914, and made regular entries until 1964. Married Sallie Edna Newton in 1903. They had six children. Their youngest son was killed in World War II. Established in 1878 by Quaker colonists led by Paris Cox, this was the first Anglo settlement in Crosby County, Texas, and the original county seat of Crosby County. The population of 600 declined after the county seat was moved to Emma in 1891, and by 1895, after the Quakers moved to Friendswood (Brazoria County, Texas), the colony was disbanded.
