January 31, 1809 in Illinois, and died January 03, 1899 in Franklin Co.,
Texas. He married MARY ANN COOK June 30, 1830
in Jasper Co., Georgia. She was born
September 03, 1812 in South Carolina, and died March 31, 1887 in Purley,
Franklin Co., Texas.
Notes for JAMES BROOKS SPARKS:
James is not listed with his family in
the 1850 census of Tallapoosa County,
Alabama. Family legend says that one day he went to town and his wife, Mary,
asked him to bring back a "smoothing iron" when he returned. It so
happened that when he got to town a group of men were just leaving for the
California "gold diggins" and
asked Jim to go with them. He wanted to go but did not have time to return home
and tell his family. For about two years the family did not know where he was.
He may not have made it to California but he did go to Texas to visit his
brother, Francis. He then returned to Alabama and when he got home he went up
to Mary, gave her an iron, and said,
"Here's your "smoothing iron."
He then moved his family to Texas in 1852 settling in what is now the
southern part of Franklin County.
James B Sparks was issued a patent to
Public Lands of the United States on July 1, 1845. It covered the following
described lands in Alabama: The West 1/2 Southwest 1/4 of Section 18, Twp. 24
of Range 3 of lands subject to sale from the Montgomery Land Office. The tract
contained 80.34 acres. (GLO records, Cash Book-Montgomery #1434, page 258.)
James B Sparks also recieved a Grant
from the State of Texas for 320 acres of land in Titus County. Filed for record
November 15, 1859 in Book 2, page 72.

Family tradition says that Mary Ann Cook
was born in France and came to the United States by the way of New Orleans. The
1880 census of Franklin County Texas (Family 203) shows that Mary's father was
born in North Carolina and her mother in Tennessee. Mary is reported to have
been a very good cook and fine housekeeper.

Notes for WILLIAM BOYD WYLIE:
He came to Texas and settled in the Cypress
community in what is now the southern part of Franklin County. He served as a
private during the Civil War. According to his pension application he enlisted
in 1862, went into regular service in 1863 serving in Company E, Stone's
Cavalry Regiment. This was a part of the 6th Texas Cavalry. Also the record
shows that he was in Company E, Texas Partisan Rangers. The pension application
was filed March 1, 1910 but evidently he died before it could be approved for
it was never given a number.

Mary was living with her son, John, in
Corpus Christi when that city was hit by a hurricane on September 14, 1919.
John's house was washed away and evidently Mary, John and his wife were all
lost. Eva, Mary's daughter wrote a letter to Angie Cranford telling of the
loss.

shows Allen H Hargrove, his wife, Mary, and two children, Eva, age 5 and John,
age 4. (Precinct 6--Nanional Archives flim T9-1298)
Information from Mary's Widow pension
application shows that Allen enlisted in Company H, 3rd Regiment, Texas Cavalry
(Ross' Brigade) as a private on August 16, 1861. He later was elected
Lieutenant. Served in Georgia, surrendered at Jackson, Mississippi and was paroled April 17th 1865.

1885 in Franklin Co., Texas. He was born
December 18, 1832 in Alabama, and died October 24, 1900 in Franklin Co., Texas.
Notes for ANGILYN BALSORA SPARKS:
This lady was
generally known as "Angie" and in later life was referred to as
"Aunt Angie" by almost all who knew her. She is buried next to her
first husband, Spencer Harrison Shearer and her tombstone reads: Angie Shearer
Cranford.
In both the 1850 census of Tallapossa
Co, Alabama and the 1860 census of Titus Co., Texas the name is spelled
Angeline or Angeline C. In the 1880 census of Franklin Co., Texas it is shown
as Angelina. Evidently the one taking
the census did not know the correct spelling of her name and mistook the middle
name B for C.
Angie B Cranford made an application for
a pension from the State of Texas for service of John White Cranford during the
Civil War. No. 22521.

Wounded at the battle of Knoxville. He
was wounded in the throat and this bothered him until his death.
Spencer Harrison Shearer or Sherer, Harrison, was called Harrison by
the family to destinguish him from his father who was also named Spencer
Harrison Shearer
When the Civil War
began he enlisted in Company I, 11th Texas Cavalry at Camp Reeves, Grayson
County, Texas on October 2, 1861 as a private for a period of 12 months.
On May 8, 1862, the 11th Texas Cavalry
was reorganized and became a part of Harrison's Brigade, Wheeler's Corp, Army
of Tennessee and mustered into the Confederate Service for two years.
On May 13, 1863 S H Sherer was elected
to Bvt. 2nd Lt., Company G.
In January, 1864 he was wounded near
Knoxville, Tennessee.

Notes for WILLIAM LEE BARNES:
William Lee Barnes (Daddy Bill) came to New Mexico with his
family in January 1915 and took up a government homestead in the area which is
now in the northern part of Lea County, New Mexico. The legal description of
the homestead is: East 1/2 Section 26, Township 9 South, Range 35 East of the
New Mexico Principal Meridian.
In the 1920s he was able to buy from the First National Bank,
in Portales, NM, other lands that were acquired by the bank, by foreclosure.
Among these were the Farmer place, the Carrol place and other lands in Sections
18 & 19 of this Township and also the King place and Dobbins place that lay
to the north of his homestead.
He was always a cattleman at heart and in his youth was a
noted bronc ridder.
