MRS. MARY JANE DINWIDDIE WHITFIELD
MEMBER PIONEER FAMILY DIES
Mrs. R. M. Whitfield (nee Mary Jane Dinwiddie) died at her
home at Millersview Sunday evening at six o'clock, august 31. She was 72 years
11 months and 2 days of age at the time of her death. She was born September 29,
1857, near Brenham Washington County, Texas, and was married to Robert M.
Whitfield May 23, 1878. Ten children were born to this union, six of whom, 3
boys and 3 girls, survive their mother. There are eight grand children, as well
as two brothers and two sisters.
The deceased and her family have been prominent in Concho
County since their removal from Washington County here many years ago. She was
known and loved throughout the county, and members of her family are prominent
in practically every part of the county. She was converted and embraced the
Presbyterian faith in a meeting conducted by the Revs. Jack Atkinson and Wm.
Bowers at Springfield church, Washington County in 1876. After removing to
Millersview, where there was no organized church of that denomination, she
united with the Methodist church, and was known for her devout Christian life.
Funeral services were conducted Monday evening at Millersview
by the Rev. J. Knox Boling, Presbyterian minister, assisted by Rev. Ezell, of
Paint Rock, and Rev. J. L. Bryant, of Eden, Methodist ministers.
During the last few months of her life Mrs. Whitfield was
confined to her bed, which gave her children many opportunities to repay the
love showered on them in childhood days and reminds one of the little poem
"The purest thing I know in all earths holdings
Is mother-love her precious child enfolding:
Yet when the mother's foot-steps feeble groweth,
As sweet the child-love then which round her floweth."
