ED JACKSON
"Death Claims Ed Jackson"
Beginning as a Newsboy, He Acquired a Fortune
San Angelo Tex., Dec 23, -Ed Jackson, who began his career thirty-five years
ago as a newsboy on the streets of Kansas City, and later worked as a sheep
herder in West Texas, died today, leaving an estate of more than $1,000,000 in
land, cattle, goats. Jackson was 50 years old and a
bachelor.
Jackson supported his widowed mother by the sale of
newspapers in the streets of Kansas City. Later he worked as a street lamp
cleaner in Kansas City, and the two managed to save enough to remove to Austin,
Tex., where the boy drove a mule street car. In 1880 Jackson came to San Angelo
and herded sheep at a salary of $10 a month, taking his pay out in sheep from
his employer. Two years later he had a flock of his own, and in 1885 he took up
100 sections from the State, which he sold for $300,000 in 1898 to St. Louis
parties.- San Antonio Express
