Near Dear Grove, Clay County, there are two intelligent and interesting children, ANNIE LEE and LONNIE WALTON, children of WALTER and RUTHEY WALTON. They have seven grandmothers living. On the mother’s side, Mr. G. E. MCARTHUR age 41, Mrs. T. STRATON age 62, Mrs. ELEIZABETH LAVERN, age 66, Mrs. A A. BROWLEY, age 88. On the father’s side, Mrs. ADELAIDE WALTON, age 48, Mr. ELRIED WALTON, age 76, Mrs. AMANDA M. THREADGILL, age 74. Written by J. MILLER.

Charlie, Nov. 8: JOHN MYER’S barn caught fire and almost destroyed his entire crop.
THOMAS HARRISON and Miss LILLIE HERON were married by Rev. TAYLOR WHITE at the home of the bride’s parents.
Bro. WEEKS, a young M. E. minister from Kentucky, is staying with the HOUSEHOLDER family and recently preached two fine sermons.

Cambridge, Nov. 2: Judge PATTON lectured at the school.
Mrs. MAUD BURKS of Clarksville is here to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.A. SPANGLER.
Rev. J. W. BELL and family will move to Denton county.
L. T. RINEY of Jolly moved to the P. B.MITCHELL place.
J. P. KELLER returned home from Bowie to receive the benefit of our school.
JAMES CAMPBELL was home for a visit.

Deaths
The infant son, age two months, of Mr. and Mrs. JAMES JOHNSON of Indian Territory, died at the residence of the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. WEBB of Henrietta, Monday night. Funeral services were held Tuesday and burial at city cemetery.

Wanted for Horse Theft
Sheriff GEORGE arrested CHARLIE GROVES, alias WILL GROSS, on a charge of horse theft. The arrest was made at the request of Erath County officers where the alleged theft was made.

C. DEAN of Jolly was in town, just from Smith county where he reports farmers are in a bad way, many foreclosures.

Mrs. E. S. WELDON returned from a visit with the C. N. BAKER family at Myrtle. She was accompanied by Miss LIZZIE HUDGINS of Grapevine, a sister of Mrs. Baker.

The family of P. M. MCKINNEY will move from Vernon to occupy the W. S. KNIGHT residence at the corner of California and Spring streets. Mr. McKinney succeeds M. L. SULLIVAN as manager of the PARLIN & ORENDORFF Co.

Fatal Fire
Hot Springs, Ark., Nov. 10: Dead: FRANK KAUFMAN, CHARLEY JOHNSON and CLARA ERHART from a fire at the A. ERHART’S bakery on Central Ave., a three story building occupied by the Erhart family as a residence on the third floor. Some employees slept on the second floor, including FRANK KAUFMAN and CHARLES JOHNSON.

Policeman Killed
Atlanta, Georgia, Nov. 10: Patrolman J. T. PONDER was killed Monday night when he was shadowing a supposed burglar who entered the wholesale whiskey house of L. STEINAU…

ALEXANDER J. CRUTCHFIELD, an old pioneer and respected citizen, died at Fort Worth, Texas from dropsy.

ROBERT BARRY, 9 years old, was dragged to death by a cow at Norman, Oklahoma Territory. He was taking the animal to water and tied the rope around his waist.

CHARLES KINNEBROUGH, age 10, died at Salem, Oklahoma Territory, from snakebit.

R. R. WILSON was found dead in a cornfield near Crawford, Texas, shot dead by unknown parties.

Miss IDA SUMMERS allegedly suicided at Enid, Oklahoma Territory.

A.J. STEWARD killed himself with chloroform near Baird, Texas.

ALBERT MOSSLEY, 14 years old, was caught in the shaft of a gin near Greenville, Texas and was killed.

J. A. BENNETT was given a life sentence at Hillsboro, Texas for the murder of Mrs. MARY JENKINS in December of last year.

BEN LLOYD was thrown by a horse near Franklyn, Texas and killed.

Buffalo Springs, Nov. 8: Pastor G. H. BIDDY preached a splendid sermon. At the close of services, J. M.SUTHERLAND of Collin County and Miss LULA CHRISTIAN of Buffalo Springs were united in marriage.
The public school begins next Monday, S. N. SUTHERLAND as teacher.

Charlie, Nov. 15: F. M. HOGAN and family arrived here from Milam County. He lived here about three years ago.
Rev. J. E. CRUTCHFIELD and wife of Benavanue passed through town.
The examining trial of young WILLIE MYER, the boy charged with entering the postoffice, was held and his bond set for $300.00.

Mrs. LOU BROWN of Woodbine is visiting her daughter Mrs. W.A. DAWSON who is ill.
MINNIE, the little granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. P. JONES, is very ill.
Mrs. EUNICE ALEXANDER accepted a position with ALCORN & CROXTON and will have charge of the millinery department.
Mrs. M. IKARD sent the Independent office some fine pears from her orchard.

Saturday evening, a peddler who gave his name as S. YOUNG, claimed to have been knocked on the jaw and robbed for $15 near the R. F. FEATHERSTON’s farm in Riverland neighborhood and Young was brought to town by Mr. FEATHERSTON’S son and R. T. GREEN of Henrietta, who works for Mr. Featherston. .. jaw bone was fractured. Young is being cared for at H. C. HOLT’S.

The five year old child of P. L. ROGERS at Caddo, Indian Territory was burned to death when her dress caught fire from a stove.

At near Chico, A. MARTIN was accidentally killed when his pistol dropped from his pocket and the bullet discharged, bullet went through his head.

JOHN VASSER, a boy, was acquitted at Weatherford, Texas, charged with murder.

WALDIN APPLING jumped from a train at Cleburne, Texas and was badly injured.

Little MAY HEIGH, 8 year old, picked 204 pounds of cotton near Waxahachie.

J. A. WRIGHT pleaded guilty to five indictments for forgery at Hillsboro, Texas and received a sentence of ten years.

WILLIAM J. GRANT, who was charged with the murder of TOM WESSON at Giddings, Texas, was acquitted.

WILLIAM JONES, a brakeman on the Katy RR, was caught between cars at LaGrange, Texas and cut to pieces.

SAM FURGUSON, a negro, was shot and killed while attempting to enter the residence of JOE MILLS at Houston, Texas, for burglary.

THOMAS COLEMAN, colored, was shot and killed at Fort Worth in a quarrel over a game of dominoes.

J. D. HARSTON/ HARRISON at Minco, Indian Territory is charged with defrauding a widow out of a $144 per year pension. She had not received her pension in four years.

Prospect, Nov. 20: Mrs. S. T. WYNN has been sick.

CARLTON MITCHELL young negro, was run over by a train near Galveston and died.
LUM HEAD was jailed at Bonham, Texas for alleged murder of his son-in-law.
MATTHEW WINFIELD, a brakeman, was badly hurt at Denton, Texas.
A child of BEE MARSHALL at Bonham died from diphtheria.
THOMAS A. EVANS, who was shot near Hutto by JOHN HYSMITH/HIGHSMITH, died from wounds.
Mrs. W. F. MCGOWAN was thrown from a buggy at Amarillo and badly injured.
Engineer FRANK BERRY was killed from a wreck on the Rock Island RR near Renfrow, Oklahoma Territory.

Los Angeles, California, Nov. 24: JOHN LEE was arrested here on a warrant issued by the U. S. district court of northern Texas on the charge of attempting to murder W. B. DANFORTH at the time the Missouri, Kansas and Texas train was held up at Atoka, Indian Territory in 1893. Lee, who is but 21 years old, denied any knowledge of the affair.

Deaths
ALBERT ESLER was found dead at this house a few miles north of town Sunday morning by ABE EATON, who works on an adjoining farm to Esler’s. Mr. Esler had been sick with severe pains in his stomach and chest. Justice PATTERSON held an inquest and rendered a verdict of heart failure. Mr. Esler lived alone. Mr. Eaton visited him on Saturday and found him better. Mr. Esler was a peculiar character and somewhat eccentric, particularly on the subject of religion. … He had some property and had said before he died, he had made a will giving $500 to the Buckner Orphans Home at Dallas and the rest of his estate to the Evangelical Church of this city. Patterson made a careful search but found no will, but found several notes, some well secured, some outlawed.
Unknown Man
JOE FORD reports the peculiar and sudden death of a well digger, whose name he does not remember. The man went to the house of Q. B. CHAPMAN in Bellevue to work a well, and at night, was shown his room, but the next morning the room was not occupied and his body was found in the middle of the street in front of the house. Justice HUDSON rendered the death from natural causes.

Burkville, Texas, Nov. 30: News reached here that FRANK MACK, 8 year old son of H. F MACK, who lives eight miles east of here, was killed in a runaway Saturday morning. Little Frank and two other boys were riding on a load of fodder, when the horses ran away, throwing Frank against a tree, killing him.

Enid, Oklahoma Territory, Dec. 1: JOHN MAUK, age 24, son of GILBERT MAUK of this town, shot and killed himself during the absence of his family. He had been in an asylum but was discharged.

Silver City, New Mexico, Dec. 1: The body of LULA WERNER, 24 year daughter of a rancher living south of here, was found in a gully near her home… posse looking for AMBROSIO GARCIA, a Mexican sheepherder.

Ardmore, Indian Territory, Dec. 1: The smallest child born in this area is the little four day old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. N. C. WOOD of Ardmore, weighs only three pounds.

Kremlin, Oklahoma Territory, Dec. 1: GEORGE BLAINE, living nine miles west of here, fell from his wagon and was crushed to death by the wheels.

Taylor, Texas, Dec. 1: R. B. HUTTO and FLOYD FINDELL, farmers, lying near Taylor, say a few days ago, a landowner living between Bartlett and Davilla, discharged some parties hunting in his fields and after the hunters left, a cartridge was found, filled with JOHNSON grass seed. .. novel way of sowing farms with JOHNSON grass.

Campbell, Texas, Dec. 1: WILL FLYNN, section foreman at this place, was shot in the back of the head, by some unknown party.
Gayhill, Texas, Dec. 1: A deaf German, CHIRS MOORE, who lives in this neighborhood, was killed by a freight train.

Guthrie, Okla. Terr., Nov. 20: A 16 year old son of JAMES JACKSON of Seward township, fell under the wheels of a steam traction engine and was crushed to death.

Cleburne, Texas, Dec. 1: The habeas corpus trial of STOKES SHAW, charged with killing TOM CRANE, resulted SHAW in jail without bail.

Ardmore, Indian Territory, Dec. 1: The postoffice and store of W. S. HODGES at Leon, I. T. burned.

ESSEX HARWOOD, colored, age 93, died at Denison, Texas.
ALLEN PRICE died near Blossom Prairie, Texas of hydrophobia.
CHARLES ANDERSON, noted negro leader, was killed at a negro festival at Gonzales, Texas.
Two negroes, HARRY TUCKER and JAMES BOYD, had a fight on a farm near Texarkana and Boyd is dead.
DIXON L. AMOS was arrested at Texarkana, charged with safe blowing.
S.W. TURNER, age 83, toothless for years, is cutting a new set of teeth, lives at Copperas Cove, Texas.
THOMAS PETERS, a blacksmith at Fort Worth, got his leg broken while shoeing a horse.

Morgan, Texas, Dec. 20: In a difficulty near here, JEB HARRIS was stabbed seven times, dying within minutes. JOE CLAYBROOK was arrested.

Galveston, Dec. 1: Mrs. ANDERSON, age 89, wife of WILLIAM ANDERSON, was found dead from chloroform and carbolic acid poisoning. She was the mother of seven children…asylum.

Ardmore, Ind. Terr., Dec. 1: Upon motion of the defendant’s attorneys, the trial of CLARENCE B. DOUGLASS, charge with the murder of JAMES WILLIAMS, editor, was continued until next term.

Myrtle, Dec. 7: Mr. and Mrs. A. BELL, Miss ALLIE BELL and ISHAM ARNOLD returned from a visit in Indian Territory.
M. C. PRICE and family moved to Clarendon some time ago and had the misfortune of losing their only child RUBY last week. The body was brought here for burial.

J. M. CLAIBORNE, who was run over at Jolly by a Katy train several weeks and whose leg was amputated above the knee in consequence, has recovered sufficiently to go to his friends. He left for the home of his friend, LEWIS GREEN, in Denton County. He called at the Independent office and expressed his thanks for the people of Henrietta who helped him, especially to Mr. Bell and family.

Gravitt, Arkansas, Dec. 8: In a fight over a baseball game at Purdine, WILLIAM and J. G. MARRIOTT were fatally stabbed by ALBERT JOHNSON, who was shot and dangerously wounded by the Marriotts.

El Reno, Okla. Terr., Dec. 7: The seven year old daughter of JAMES SMITH was burned to death caused by her clothes igniting from a spark from the stove.

W. W. WAYBURN, lately of Ryan, was here. He and his brother built the first house in Henrietta. It was near where the City Mills is now located. Mrs. Wayburn died recently and he will make his home in Henrietta with his son-in-law HENRY GARDNER, the Katy section foreman.

EMIL SCHMIDT, a wealthy farmer near San Antonio, was clubbed to death and robbed.
LOUIS SONISE, who claimed to be 118 years old, died at Buffalo Gap, Texas.

Obituary for RUBIE, only child of M. J. and KATIE PENN PRICE, died near Clarendon of croup on morning of Dec. 1, 1897, age three years two months eight days.

Lone Star and Vashti
Vashit, Dec. 22: Church and Sunday school froze out last Sunday. Pastor ROACH did not come. There was a cheerful surprise, RICHARD THOMPSON of lone Star, having summoned Rev. J. E. NEWSOM, in company with his brother and sister met the north bound train at Bellevue, bringing his bride, Miss HATTIE SULLINS from Savoy, Fannin County, and they were duly united in the holy bonds of wedlock. Mr. Thompson is well known around Lone Star as an industrious young man and his lovely bride once lived at Vashti, a most excellent Christian lady.
Mrs. J. A. PHELPS of Lone Star has a nice flock of guinea fowls.

Death
HAMMIE ALCORN, little son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. ALCORN, died Wednesday morning.

Gilvin-White
The Baptist church last Sunday night was the scene of a very pretty wedding which took place after the conclusion of the sermon. JOHN B. GILVIN and Miss NINNIE MAY WHITE, both of this city were married. Miss White came down on the south aisle on the hand of Mrs. CURTIS MCKEEHAN and the groom came down the north aisle with Mr. McKeehan, where the pastor, Rev. T. C. SWOFFORD, united them in a pretty ceremony. W. D. GILVIN, brother of the groom, and Miss IZZA RAWLS, cousin of the bride, acted as ushers. The wedding march was played by Misses MABLE and LUCILLE WINNING on the violin and organ. The groom is a prominent young business man, junior member of the firm D. GILVIN & Co. The bride is a niece of Mrs. M. J. DENNING and is a most estimable young lady.

Shooting at Courthouse
Eastland, Dec. 222: As district court opened Monday, WILL WEBB and HUGH ADAMS exchanged courtesies with shotguns at 20 passes. No damage done. Both in jail.

Ikard school house, Dec. 24: Our school is progressing nicely under the skillful management of Miss SUSIE GORMLEY. The literary is in full blast.
There was a dance at Miss SALLIE GUTHRIE’S the night of the 27th.
All of PARKER HILL’S friends will please wear the usual badge of morning on account of his losing his best girl. She will start for the coast in a few days.
Mrs. BURKETT and children left to spend the holidays with her mother at Farmersville.
LONNIE NOWLIN and family left to spend the holidays.
J. W. BURKETT is trying to hatch but it is a hard life to live.

Tragedy in Rusk County
Henderson, Dec. 27: A report reached here about a tragedy at Pine Hill Thursday evening. JOHN OSBORN went to Pine Hill, had his shotgun, began firing into the store and houses, wounded ARTHUR BUCKNER, JOHN BUCKNER, PARSON HENDRICKS, CHARLES W. H. HILLEN, BOB MARTIN, colored, BABE HAMPTON and wife, colored. It is thought that Charles Hendricks will die. Osburn then killed himself.

CARMICHAEL –WADSWORTH
ROBERT F. CARMICHAEL of McLennan County, and Miss ALMA WADSWORTH of Jolly were married Sunday afternoon at the residence of the bride’s parents, Rev. W.W. STEELE officiated. The couple took the south bound train for their home near Mart in McLennan County. (long description of Mr. Carmichael’s difficulty in getting here on the railroads)

BEAR-UTT
On Tuesday evening at Gainesville, LIT BEAR of this town and Miss CLELLIA UTT of Nocona were married by Rev. A. L. JONES at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. GUS MATTOX… bride’s parents knew nothing of the intended wedding… The bride is the daughter of H. UTT, a stockman at Nocona, and a belle of Nocona society. They will make their home in Henrietta.

GRAVES-HILL
On Thursday, the 28th, Miss SUSIE HILL, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. F. HILL of this city, was married to R. L. GRAVES of Wise County. The wedding took place at the residence of the bride’s parents, performed by Justice PATTERSON. They will live in Wise County.

WHITE-DONALDSON
On Dec. 26, at the Mirlberry / Mulberry school house, three miles west of Bellevue, J. M. WHITE of Charlie and Miss EFFIE DONALDSON were united in marriage by Rev. M. WHITE of Charlie.

WELCH-HOWELL
JOE WELCH and Miss CALLIE HOWELL were married at the Charlie school house on Dec. 23 by Rev. M. T. WHITE.

The Independence erred last week by stating the FLANAGAN-CARPENTER wedding took place at the residence of FIL HILL.

Local
Mr. LANDREWS and Mrs. FIRESTONE, tow of the force of the City Mills, engaged in a difficulty at the mill yesterday in which a chisel was used with great effect on Mr. Firestone’s head. Mr. Landrews drew his wages and departed.

Decatur, Tex., Dec. 29: the case of the state vs R. JOHNSON, charged with murder, was tried and he was sentenced to 25 years.

Baby in a Well
Tuesday evening a little child, age 2, of Mr. and Mrs. J. D. MERMITT, who live at the HOMES place on North Bridge street, tumbled in an old unused well near the house and remained in the water about 20 minutes. W. E. IKARD went down to raise the child who had a large snake coiled about it. The snake had not bitten the child and made no attempt to bite Mr. Ikard. The child recovered, then went into a high fever.

Yoakum, Texas, Dec. 28: ED BATES of the mercantile firm of BATES Bros. of Edgar located nine miles from here, was shot four times and seriously wounded.

Kosse, Texas, Dec. 28: BOB ROBISON was shot in the stomach in a saloon. NAT HOLTON, the proprietor, gave himself up and claimed to have done the shooting.

Rockville, Texas, Dec. 28: ISAAC DURRETT was shot and mortally wounded at a dance here by unknown assailant.

Chattanooga, Dec. 28: WILL and JOHN LIVINGSTON, brothers, at the Blue Creek mines in Alabama, quarreled while drinking and a fight was prevented by friends. Will, age 18, borrowed a shotgun and shot John to death.
