PROVIDENCE CEMETERY
(Photos by Amy Cumbie)
Providence Cemetery is located about 5 miles south of Jacksonville, Texas, on FM 347 just out of Dialville. When Mr. Mid Deason died, Mrs. Deason wanted him buried on the knoll under the trees. She wanted him buried where each time she walked out on her porch she could see his grave. She stood on her porch, and when the men got to the right place, she waved her bonnet at them and there they dug the grave.
Providence cemetery was established in 1884. Permanent care foundation
maintains the cemetery. Many pioneers are buried here. There is an unusual
monument of Rev. Thomas Trusvan Booth, an early Methodist circuit rider minister
who brought his family to Cherokee County in 1868, settling in Providence in
1873.
