Last week while trying to make good his escape from the Imperial State Farm, J. Helton, son of Mrs. N. M. Helton, was shot in the back by the guarding officer and died almost instantly.  Six other men were also implicated in the attempt to escape and one other was killed.  One made the escape uninjured and the other four surrendered.

It will be recalled that more than a year ago, J. Helton was convicted of horse theft and given a suspended sentence.  Only a short time later he forged a check and was sent to the Imperial State Farm where he met his death.  It is reported that some time ago the boy wrote his mother that death would be preferable to his lot and that he wished other boys to take a lesson from his sad plight.

The body of Mr. Helton was shipped in Saturday and was immediately sent for burial to the South Gabriel cemetery.

Nothing could have been more saddening to a mother's heart, nothing more grevious to her soul.  Every mother in this community realizes the deepness of such sorrow and sympathizes with Mrs. Helton in this hour of sadness and despondency.  The Enterprise extends deep sympathy to the berieved ones in their sad hour.
