The Liverpool Cemetery
The first burial site used by the citizens of Liverpool was located on a tract of land donated to the community by Dick Holt, a son-in-law of T.J. Callihan. It was located on the west side of Chocolate Bayou in the bend of the bayou between the present site of Albert Finkle Park and the railroad tracks, where the Enchanted Edgewater subdivision is located today. Due to a contested title to the property in the early 1870s, further burials were discontinued, and a new site was sought for the cemetery.
The present site was used for burials as early as 1875, although the deed transfer was not recorded in the Brazoria County Deed Records until 1882. Thomas C. Nelson deeded the three-acre tract to the three trustees of the Liverpool School District # 10 to be used for a school, church and cemetery. The three Liverpool School Trustees at that time were W.C. Callihan, W. Rowan and John Corrigan. Thomas C. Nelson, a native of England and an early settler of Liverpool, was active and instrumental in the platting, laying out and naming of Liverpool after his hometown in England.
Some of the earlier burials were disentombed and reburied in the new site, but many were left in unmarked graves. It has been rumored that some of the early grave sites were eroded and washed away by Chocolate Bayou.
The present Liverpool Cemetery is located on a wooded tract of land on the west bank of Chocolate Bayou, south of County Road #171 at the end of St.
Ann Street. There are two historical markers at the entrance to the cemetery. One is a Texas Historical Marker for the Liverpool Cemetery that was installed by the Texas Historical Survey Committee in 1966, and the other is a large granite marker erected by the state of Texas in 1936, honoring Thomas Jefferson Callihan, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto. The marker for Thomas Jefferson Callihan was originally placed on the site of the first cemetery, supposedly near his grave, but was later moved to its present location at the new cemetery when the property was developed into the Enchanted Edgewater subdivision.
The cemetery was originally managed and governed by the trustees of the Liverpool School. When the Liverpool Common School District #10 was dissolved in 1955, a board of three trustees to govern the cemetery was elected by the citizens of Liverpool. The first three trustees to serve in this capacity were Seaford L. Callihan, Elizabeth Grupe Simpson and Mary Helen West Beall. The three current trustees are Stanley Richardson, Martha Orsak Nash and James B. Callihan. Other trustees that have served on the board are Johnnie L. Glassford, Marjorie Clement Glassford and George H. Arth, Jr.
A one-room schoolhouse was built on the site in the early 1880s, and it was used for a school and a union church until it was damaged by a storm in 1893. The school was replaced by a new building which was built on the site where the Lloyd Draper family resides today. The old building was repaired and used for a Union church until it was completely destroyed during the 1900 Storm.
The earliest burial of record is that of Moses Ayers, who died June 21, 1852, the baby son of Ezekiel and Nancy J. Estes Ayers. Evidently those were hard times for the Ayers family. They lost three more children: a daughter, Mary F., September 20, 1852; another daughter, Alice J., September 26, 1854; and a son, Ezekiel, Jr., September 12, 1858. The mother, Nancy J. Estes Ayers, also died at the early age of thirty-one years on February 2, 1861. There is no record of burial for the father, Ezekiel Ayers.
The earliest-born person buried in the Liverpool Cemetery, according to cemetery records, is Allen Levie. He was born November 4, 1795. Some other early-born people buried there are William Roberson, born August 18, 1810; Henry Conrad Grupe, born January 5, 1815; Gottfred Moller, born July 11, 1816; Thomas Jefferson Callihan, born May 10, 1817; John Wehrly, born November 21, 1818; and Henry Clement, born November 23, 1826.
The oldest person at the date of death that is buried there is William Roberson, who was born August 18, 1810, and was 99 years, 7 months and 2 days old when he died March 2, 1910, from injuries sustained when the horses he was driving in a buggy became frightened and bolted, causing him to be thrown from the vehicle.
In tabulating the records of the burials, it was noted that five persons buried in the Liverpool Cemetery died on Christmas Day: Edith Cooper died on December 25, 1934; Mary Jane Corrigan died December 25, 1940; James P. Smith died on December 25, 1934; Thomas H. Smith died on December 25, 1974; and Steve Van Norman died December 25, 1958.
There are many veterans buried in the Liverpool Cemetery. At least one veteran served in the Texas Army at the Battle of San Jacinto: Thomas Jefferson Callihan. A monument was erected in his honor by the state of Texas in 1936. Possibly there are other Texas Army veterans in the first cemetery, but there are no markers or records to confirm it. Tombstone markings and family records indicate at least ten Confederate Civil War veterans buried in the Liverpool Cemetery: Joshua Abbott, William Burner, William C. Callihan, Joseph H. Clement, Frank Cramer, Henry Conrad Grupe, George A. Rein, John Smith, Jacob Seibel, and Peter Seibel. When World War I broke out in 1918, the men of Liverpool again joined the forces to fight for their country. Records, which may not be complete, list the following World War I veterans: Gerald S. Abbott, George Henry Arth, Sr., Stanley F. Anderson, James Arthur Bass, Seaford L. Callihan, Verde B. Callihan, Hiram G. Clement, Claude C. Erskine, William Reese Grupe, Edward Hillers, Ernest C. Lynch, William M. Mardis, Frank H. Nelms, Floyd Edwin Patty, Thomas H. Smith, Walter G. Simpson, Steve Van Norman, James L. Worrall, and John Henry Wehrly.
The following is a list of some of the veterans of World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War: Fred Maceo Abshire, Eppes W. "Jack" Beall, Jr., James F. Conner, Terrell Devereaux, Irvin T. Driskill, Gordon H. Glassford, Robert Charles Hay, Albert M. Hayden, Terry Bryant Hillers, Henry A. Kruzan, Roy E. Larson, Ernest James Lynch, James Gaines Martin, Ralph F. Richardson, Cecil Shiver, James M. Smith, Joseph R. Toucheck, George R. Van Norman, George W. Van Norman and Maurice A. Waltrip.
In October 1951 the Cemetery Board, consisting of E. R.. "Ed" Beall, Edgar Franzen and Seaford L. "Buck" Callihan, purchased a narrow strip of land adjoining the north boundary of the cemetery from Johnny and Ruby Joseph. The land was needed for a road to complete the circle around the cemetery to make it more convenient in handling funeral processions and holding burials. Charlie Seibel contributed the $250.00 to purchase the property.
The Liverpool Cemetery Board has until recently been plagued with poor and incomplete records of early burials, but the present board is working hard to improve the system with better record keeping and stricter regulations to insure a more efficient and successful burial ground for the community.

The Old Estes Cemetery
There has been much talk about the old cemetery on Austin Bayou by the old-timers of Liverpool, just like the talk about the old Austin Bayou Schoolhouse, but research at the court house and the county library provided no information.
Several old-timers of the community indicate the cemetery was located on the east bank of Austin Bayou near the old Anderson Estes home place and was used for family burials from the 1 830s to the 1880s, and possibly the 1890s. Iva Stinson recalls going there with her parents, Anton and Lizzie Peterson, in a Model-T Ford when she was a small girl
Adrian Moller also recalls visiting the site many times and says that it was located about half a mile north of where his grandfather’s (Dan Moller’s) old home place was located. He also said it was located on the east side of the bayou with some large oak trees nearby. Ten or twelve graves had no stone markers; one had a wooden marker.
The old Dan Moller homestead is still standing today, but there are no traces of evidence of the old Estes homestead to serve as a guide to the cemetery location. And without any stone markers to find, it is hopeless to search through the brambles, under brush and tallow trees. Evidently it was located in the area across the bayou and northeast of the present Jack Garrett home.
