Legends and Stories of the Big Bend Area

Brewster County Marble
Alpine Avalanche April 13, 1911

The Lubbock Avalanche contains the following: In Brewster County there is an inexhaustible amount of marble. There are only four places in the world where high-grade marble is mined, Italy, Greece, Vermont and Georgia, and the quality of the Texas product is equal to that of these famed marble producing sections. According to statistics compiled by the Texas Realty Journal, the consumption of marble in the United States has doubled every ten years and the total amount of marble sales for 1909 was $35,000,000. It is claimed that on one marble mountain in Brewster County, there is more marble in sight than could be moved in 100 years with all the men and machinery that could be put to it, and core drillings have proved that the deposit extends 100 feet below the surface.

Special Note From Verna Bonner: John Young was a very successful businessman who arrived in Alpine in 1907. He became aware of the huge marble deposits in the area and sought to develop Marble Mountain-located twenty-five miles south of Alpine. Although a large amount of money and time was spent by locals to promote and produce this marble, the problems of transporting this product became too much and thus, the industry soon became dormant.
