Legends and Stories of the Big Bend Area

W. L. "Cap" Barler, was a former Customs Agent and Texas Ranger stationed in Sanderson. There are several stories about him and "Chico" his favorite mount. One of the best stories about "Cap" and "Chico" was the time that former Terrell County Sheriff Jim Nance and Barler went down below Marathon. "Chico" and Nance's horse were in a trailer behind the vehicle and when the men started home Barler stated his desire to go by Marathon, which was farther and over a rougher road, but Nance complied, figuring that Barler had business there. When they got to Marathon, Nance told Barler to tend to his business and he would wait for him, to which Barler replied: "I don't have any business here. I wanted to come this way because "Chico" had never been this way and seen this part of the country and I wanted him to see it."
