THE THOMAS CRAWFORD JACKSON FAMILY STORY
Ella Kone nee Palmer Jackson with
Camilla, Necious, Lane and Burl  Circa 1902
Thomas Crawford Jackson was the son of George W. Jackson and Elizabeth Sara Lane, and was born September 25, 1854 in Fayette County, Texas. On June 13, 1890, when he was almost thirty-six years of age, he married Ella Kone Palmer, who was only seventeen years old, which was less than half the age of Thomas.

She gave birth to eight children with the last one being born in 1906. By the time of her death in 1909, Thomas and the fourth and fifth child were dead.

The following letter, the original of which is in the possession of Haytee Mae Knibbe nee Jackson , was written by Ella to her brother-in-law and sister-in-law who lived in South Dakota. Punctuation has been added to make the letter more readable.

Dear brother and sister I will write again & answer your _______

letter when I was in McCulloch county but never did get any answer I am at home. I have been home 2 weeks. The morning before I got home Necious shot his self in the foot and the Dr. could not get the bullet out. I am afraid he will be a cripple for life. Don't I have bad luck. I made 180 dollars picking cotton. I paid 60 of that for debts and got the kids some clothes and lived 3 months. I had to buy horse feed. Everything was so high. I only got back with 10 dollars and had to pay that for medicine. I thought I would save enough to pay the interest on my store account  but I did not. Cotton went down to 8c a pound and of course the price for picking went down. Cotton picking is the hardest work on earth and to be in camp with a lot of kids is just awful although I will go again. My field fence is all down here and I will commence work next week on it. If I had oats I would plant our field in oats but I have no seed. Well what kind of time did you all have Xmas. Fair I guess.I had a dull Christmas. I am so lonely. I do wish you lived close. I don't like the man Camilla married. He tried to take charge of my business but he could not cut it. He will never play John Criswell on me you no(sic). Said he robbed you and I tell you right now nobody will ever rob my kids nor run over them. I am going to go to Medina this week. I sent some money to pay on my back taxes. I thought it was all settled but now they claim I owe more. Don't know what to do. The tax collector said he would have to levy on the land. Rhiliz(sic)(realize ?) want but that place be sold never. I will close. Rite(sic) soon and a long letter. When I got the check I wrote to you all but never got any answer. Many thanks to you both. Oh I am so lonesome. Today is Sunday. I do wish I could leave this old lonely place. The kids all have the grippe so by by. Love to both
