          One way to expand knowledge of your ancestors is to use records related to their associations with various organizations.  An organization is defined as a body of persons organized for a specific purpose such as club, a trade union, or for custodial purposes.   Occupational and trade union records may include Business License applications, Newsletters, Pensions, Welfare, as well as Mining, Accident & Railroad Reports.     Custodial records may consist of resident rosters of asylums, hospitals, or penal institutions.  Club records may include name rosters of professional, religious, and fraternal societies.  Researching these types of records can teach you a great deal about the people who make up your family tree, and what life was like for them.   An individual's occupations, memberships, or custodial condition may give insight into their social status or to their place of origin.  These types of records can also be used to distinguish between two individuals of the same name, especially with regard to occupations or social organization memberships.  Certain skilled occupations, trades, memberships may have been passed down from father to son, providing indirect evidence of a family relationship.  It's even possible that your surname derives from the occupation of a distant ancestor.  You can also discover family traditions that were passed down from generation to generation through “secrets” or techniques utilized by certain occupations or fraternal organizations.

     All of the records and databases listed below are FREE and can be accessed and searched without having to pay for a subscription.   We try not to list any sites that have only a few records for the purpose of getting you to a website that will charge a fee to actually see the record beyond just a name.
