Raffauf, Anton J.

Rome Feb. 9 - Alderman Anton J. Raffauf died at 2 pm yesterday at his home, 740 North James St. of tuberculcois. He had been in poor health the last three years. He was born in Ava, Oneida County, Feb. 5, 1868. For a number of years he worked in the hardware store of Wardwell Brothers and later with his brother-in-law, Frank Bael. They bought a business block and conducted a hardware store there. Mr. Bael sold out his interest to John T. S. Hyde and went to New Jersey and for several years Mr. Raffauf conducted the business alone. He was a Democratic alderman from the 7th Ward for several years and served as president of the Common Council. He was also the clerk of the committee having in charge the erection of the County Hospital in this city.

Twenty-one years ago he married Miss Mary Bael, who with three sons and two daughters survive, A. Cletus, Charles and Vincent Raffauf, Ella and Maria, all at home, also the following brothers and sisters, Marcellus of Rome, Jacob W. of Buffalo, William P. of Constantia, Mrs. J. T. S. Hyde and Miss Rose Raffauf of Rome, Mrs. William Meaferie of Brooklyn and his mother, Mrs. Gertrude Raffauf. His father, Anton Raffauf died three years ago.

North Bay - Elmer Raut, 55, of McConnellsville, died in the home of his brother, James Raut, yesterday.

Mr. Raut was a son of the late Henry and Mary Suits Raut, and was born in McConnellsville Aug. 27, 1873. He never married and had always lived in the old home.

Besides his brother, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Dennis P. Ross, Providence, RI.

McConnellsville - May 24 - The death of Henry Raut, an aged resident of this village, occurred Saturday afternoon. He had always lived in the town of Vienna. He had been sexton in the village cemetery for about 25 years. Death was due to pneumonia from which he had been ill about a week. He was 73 years of age. Mr. Raut leaves his wife, three sons, Elmer at home, James of North Bay and Fred of Oregon, and a daughter, Mrs. Dennis P. Ross of Rome. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the church.


Raut, Lucy Bell Bonner

East Florence - Dec. 12 - The funeral of Lucy Bell Bonner, wife of James Raut, who died of blood poisoning at her home in Schenectady, occurred from the M. E. Church at McConnellsville Tuesday afternoon, the Rev. Adelbert Warren of Forestport officiating, assisted by Rev. Mr. Carey, and was attended by a large number of sympathizing friends. Deceased was a daughter of Jeremiah and Eliza Bonner of this place and was born in Lewis county May 19, 1880 and removed to East Florence with her parents when about three years of age. Her education was received in the Camden High School. After graduating in 1897, she taught in the public schools of this and surrounding towns until her marriage to James Raut of Schenectady March 21, 1904, where they resided up to the time of her death. She had been a faithful Christian worker from early girlhood, uniting with the M. E. Church here when about twelve years of age. Since residing in Schenectady she had been an active member of the State Street M. E. Church and Epsworth League. Mrs. Raut was a woman who was deeply esteemed as a neighbor and made friendships wherever she went. The beautiful flowers which covered her casket showed the love and esteem in which she was held. Besides her husband and infant son, five months old, she leaves to mourn her loss, her parents, two brothers, William Bonner of Lyon Falls, Fred K. Bonner of Camden, three sisters, Mrs. Frank Olcott of Rome, Mrs. Herbert Trenham of Utica and Mrs. Emory Whitford of East Florence.


Raut, Mary

Mrs. Mary Raut of North Bay, aged 68, died at the Oneida County Hospital last night. She was admitted on May 1. She is survived by a son, James Raut, of North Bay.


Raymond, Roswell M.

Delta - The people of this village were greatly grieved yesterday morning to learn that Roswell M. Raymond, one of the oldest and most respected citizens here, had passed away at the age of 81. Mr. R. had been ailing for some time with a complication of diseases, which terminated in pneumonia. He moved here from Rome 49 years ago and conducted a boot and shoe store and shop, which, owing to failing health, he had to give up five years ago. He was always honest and upright in all his dealings. His funeral will be held on Tuesday, the 28th, at 11 am. from the M. E. Church of which he has been a member for 40 years. Rev. M.G. Wadsworth, assisted by Rev. J. W. Roberts, of Rome, will officiate. Mr. Raymond leaves an aged wife, to whom he has been married for over fifty years, and one son, William R. Raymond, of Lee Centre. In politiics he was a Democrat.


Redmond, Anastasia L.

Anastasia L. Redmond, daughter of Patrick Redmond, died at her father�s residence on Henry street in this city, last Saturday evening, of consumption, aged 20 years and 2 months. She was a exemplary young lady, and her early death brings deep grief not only to her parents, brothers and sister, but to a wide circle of friends.


Reese, Mary A.

Rome - Mary Anna Reese, 63, resident of the Town of Floyd for many years, died last night, April 29, 1936, in Rome Hospital.

She had been crippled for five years and had been confined to her bed since December 1935. She was taken to the hospital Sunday.

She was born in Lewis County May 14, 1872, daughter of the late Jacob and Helen Huffered Kirk and married George H. Reese Nov. 24, 1896.

Surviving with her husband are a daughter, Mrs. Anna Lockwood, Steuben, and five sons, Willard J., Moravia, Fred J., McConnellsville, Frank E., Floyd, Andrew A., Steuben, and George D., Trenton, three sisters, Mrs. Frank Alder, Rome, Mrs. Barney Koons and Mrs. William Wilbert, West Leyden, five brothers, Anthony, Leo, George Kirk, West Leyden, Joseph, Boonville, Frank, Chicago, also 18 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.


Reese, George H.

Rome - George H. Reese, 90, died April 1, 1954, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Andrew Lockwood, in West Edmeston after a bried illness.

Mr. Reese was born Feb. 17, 1864, in Rome. At a very young age he went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Silas Reese and remained with them for a number of years. In 1891, Mr. Reese married Mrs. Mary Kirk Price, who died April 30, 1936.

For more than 30 years Mr. Reese operated a farm in East Floyd. He retired in 1934 and for the past 15 years had resided with his daughter, Mrs. Lockwood. During the summer months he returned to Floyd and lived with his step-son, Frank E. Price.

Besides Mrs. Lockwood, he leaves two sons, Andrew Reese, North Western, and George Dewey Reese, Locks, three step-sons, Mr. Price, Willard J. Price, Homer, and Fred Price, McConnellsville, five grandchildren, three great grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren, a step-great-granddaughter, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Richard Charles Regner, 15 months old son of Mr. And Mrs. William C. Regner, 321 W. Embargo street, were held this afternoon at 3 o�clock at the home of his aunt, Mrs. Harold Jones, 321 W. Embargo street, and at the Verona Methodist Church art 2:30 p.m.

Rev. O�Dale King, D. D. Pastor of the First M.E. Church and Rev. F. M. Ullery, pastor of the Verona Methodist Church officiated.

There were floral pieces from the Sunshine and Friendship classes of the M. E. Church, relatives, friends and neighbors.

Acting as bearers were John Snyder, George Regner, Harold Jones and Lyle Eychner. Interment was made in Verona.

Reifert, Mrs. John

The funeral of Mrs. John Reifert took place at Trinity Church at 2 o'clock on Monday afternoon, Rev. G. Meisenhelder officiating. The services were largely attended. The bearers were William Besley, Louis Glesmann, George Hammann, George Vogt, Henry Near, and George Youngerman. The remains were interred in the Rome Cemetery.


Reinhart, Arthur

McConnellsville - Arthur Reinhart, 59, died yesterday afternoon, Oct. 20, 1937, in his home near here. He had been in poor health for several years.

He was born in Germany, son of the late Anton and Pauline Schmit Reinhart, and came to this country 56 years ago. He was a farmer. He married Cora Snyder March 6, 1895. She died in 1900.

He leaves one son, Augustus, at home, a brother, Frank, this village, six sisters, Mrs. Lena Alvord, Camden, Mrs. Amelia Arneuf, Minetto, Mrs. Bertha Williamson, Blossvale, Mrs. George Rice, Rome, Mrs. Minnie Lacell, Oneida, Mrs. William Stagner, Rome, several nieces and nephews.


Reinhart, Augustus

Augustus Reinhart of McConnellsville died at the Rome Infirmary this morning, where he was taken five weeks ago. Death was caused by a complication. Mr. Reinhart was born in Germany in 1872 and when 4 years old, with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Anton Reinhart, came to this country, the family settling near McConnellsville, where Mr. Reinhart had since resided. He was twice married, his second wife being Mrs. Bertha West, whom he married September 5, last. She survives also three step-children, Charles, Mertie and Bertha West, all of McConnellsville. He also leaves nine sisters and two brothers, Arthur and Frank Reinhart of Blossvale, Mrs. Emma Fisher and Mrs. Rose Hall of Buffalo, Mrs. Joseph Smith of Cleveland, O., Mrs. Pauline Alvord of Taberg, Mrs. Amelia Ranons of Minetto, Mrs. Bertha Williamson of Whitesboro, Mrs. Minnie Lowell of West Vienna, Mrs. Nettie Stagner of Blossvale. This is the first death among the large family of children. Mr. Reinhart was employed as a brakeman on the Lehigh Valley Railroad and had a large circle of friends. The funeral will be held from his late residence at McConnellsville Monday.


Remore, Peter

Camden - Peter Remore, aged 78, died in Rome June 14. his body was brought to Camden last evening for interment. The funeral was held today at the residence of Herbert Sanford, a grandson of deceased. Mr. Remore was for many years a well known resident of Camden. A son and two daughters survive him; James Remore and Mrs. George Johnson of Rome and Mrs. Thomas Whitfield of Philadelphia.


Ressegue, Harley H.

The funeral of Harley H. Ressegue will be held at his late home on the Vernon - Verona Rd., Monday at 1 p.m. Rev. F. B. Stanford officiating.

The funeral services of Harley H. Ressegue were held at his late home yesterday afternoon at 1 o�clock. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. F. B. Stanford of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Judson Davis of Verona. There was an unusually large gathering of friends and acquaintances showing the very esteem in which Mr. Ressegue was held by all who knew him. Among those present from out of town were Mrs. George Talcott, Mrs. F. E. Peckham and Mr. And Mrs. Alonzo Peckham of Buffalo, Charles Medbury of New Berlins and Eugene Dunn of New York. The floral tributes were especially fine, entirely concealing the mound at the grave. The interment was made in the family plot at the Verona Cemetery.

Reverly, Ann Green

A Native and Long-Time Resident of Oneida County

Mrs. Ann Green Reveley, whose death occurred on December 22 at Syracuse, was the daughter of Israel Green and one of the pioneer settlers of Oneida county. Born in 1815 at Lairdsville, she was one of a family of nine children and was the last survivor. Mrs. Reveley came of sturdy New England stock, her parents having been born in New Marlborough, Mass. She inherited the sterling qualities of the Puritans, devotion to duty, purity of thought and word and a strict regard for truth. In 1838 she was married in Verona to Thomas Reveley, formerly of Yorkshire, England. There she lived until 1865 and was a valued member of the community. At the death of her husband she became one of the family of he only son, George W. Reveley at Westmoreland, Verona Springs and Boonville in which her presence was invaluable. At his death she was an honored member of the household of Mrs. George Smith at Lowell and later of Mrs. Julius J. Smith of Oneida and Syracuse.

Mrs. Reveley had five children, Ellen G., recently supervisor of the Cleveland, Ohio schools, Elizabeth, now Mrs. George Smith of Greenway, George W. deceased in 1889, Alberta, now Mrs. Charles Shaver of Deansboro and Hattie J., Mrs. Julia J. Smith of Syracuse. Her counsel was sought by sons and daughter-in-law as well as by her children and her judgment was respected. She was an inspiration for the best things to her children and grandchildren. Of the latter are William H. Shaver and Mrs. Nellie Shaver Cole of Deansboro, Clark F. Shaver of Utica, Stuart T. Smith of Greenway, Frank Jefferson Reveley of New Haven, Conn., and Ida L. Reveley and Ernest Reveley Smith of Syracuse. Mrs. Reveley had two great-grandchildren, sons of Frank J. Reveley.

Short services were held from her late home, 349 Westcott street, Syracuse, today at 11 o�clock, attended by Rev. F. D. Leete of the University Avenue Methodist Church, Syracuse, of which she was a ember. The funeral services were held at Verona at 3 p.m. attended by Rev. W. H. York, a life long friend of the family and pastor of the Centenary Church of Syracuse. (Note Burial in Verona Cemetery)

Reverly, George W.

George W. Reveley died of typhoid fever at his home in the town of Boonville Saturday evening , aged 44 years. He had been sick about three weeks. The deceased formerly lived for many years on the Ford place, so called, at Verona Springs and was well known hereabout. He moved to Boonville about eight years ago. He was twice married, first to Nancy Jefferson, a niece of Mrs. R. Fox of this city and afterward to Celia Gypson of Lowell, who survives him. He also leaves a son Frank, 17 years, a daughter, Ida aged 19 years, who is attending school in this city, and four sisters, Miss Ellen G. Reveley of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. E. Shaffer of Lee, Mrs. Harriet Smith of Oneida and Mrs. Elizabeth Smith of Lowell. His aged mother has been living with him at Boonville. Mr. Reveley was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was honest and upright in all dealings with his fellow men, a genial companion and was esteemed and respected by all. (Note burial in Verona Cemetery)

The family of George W. Reveley of Verona Springs have been sadly afflicted with diphtheria. One week ago today, Hattie, a bright girl of 5 � died. Mr. Reveley and wife are both down with the disease, but are considered out of danger. Two other children are recovering. From the disease. (Note burial in Verona Cemetery)

Reynolds, Mary

Utica, April 10 - Miss Mary Reynolds, eldest daughter of Edward and Bridget Reynolds of Westmoreland, died in this city last evening after an illness of appendicitis since last Thursday. Miss Reynolds was 47 years of age and was born in Piermont, Rockland county. When a child she moved with her parents to Westmoreland and received her education there. For the past twenty years she has resided in Utica and was employed in the household of Surrogate F. M. Calder. Miss Reynolds attended St. John's Church and was a faithful and devout member. She belonged to the League of the Sacred Heart connected with the church. During her residence in Utica Miss Reynolds won many sincere friends, who will be grieved to hear of her death. She is survived by her parents and three sisters, Mrs. Alfred E. Trosset and Mrs. John Roach of Utica, and Mrs. James Martin of St. Louis, Mo., also one brother, Edward of California.

VERONA STATION April 16 -- Mary Satterlee, wife of Frank Reynolds, died form pneumonia on Sunday evening at 7 o�clock, at her home about a mile north of this place, age 58 years. She was ill only about a week. She will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends and especially by the Maxon district Sunday School, of which she was superintendent. She was an earnest Christian and will long be held in loving remembrance. Much sympathy is expressed for hew husband, who alone survives. (Note Burial in Verona Cemetery)

Boonville - Miss Lydia A. Rockwell, 86, of Ava, died June 24, 1941, at the home of her nephew, Arthur S. Vary of that village.

She had been in ill health for several years and seriously ill for the past two weeks.

Miss Rockwell was the daughter of the late David and Sally Markham Rockwell. Her early life was spent in Ava and later, for more than 34 years, she conducted a dressmaking establishment in Rome. In ???? she went to Wales where she engaged in a dressmaking business for a year and a half. She retired from business ?? years ago and returned to Ava where she had since made her home with her nephew. While in Rome she was a member of Calvary Methodist Church. When she returned to Ava she joined the Ava Methodist Church and was active in church work.

Surviving are a niece, Mrs. Edna Humphrey, Ava, a nephew, Arthur S. Vary, Ava, a cousing, Mrs. William Holes, Utica, and several cousins in the west.

Oneida - Mrs. Dora M. Rosa, 44, wife of Walter Rosa, proprietor of a hotel at Inlet, died yesterday at Oneida City Hospital.

Mrs. Rosa was born at Cleveland, NY, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Haynes. She had been married 23 years ago. Surviving are her husband, one daughter, Dorothy, and one brother.

Funeral will be at the Russell Schapp Chapel Saturday with burial at McConnellsville.


Rose, Mrs. William A.

Mrs. William A. Rose died from heart disease at 11:45 on Wednesday night at her home, 307 Bissell avenue. While she had not been well for the lst few days she was around, as usual, and prepared her husband�s breakfast on Wednesday morning. She was norn in Deerfield 48 years ago last July, and was a daughter of the late James & Melvina Peek. Except for about seven years spent in Cleveland, Ohio, she had lived in Oneida county all her life, principally in Utica and Deerfield. She was married to Mr. Rose in September 1909 and had since resided ehre. She was a member of the Baptist Church and of Hancock Circle, Ladies of the G. A. R. She was a kind and devoted wife and her sudden demise comes as a great shock to her husband. Besides her husband she leaves two brothers, Horace and Henderson Peek, both of Utica. Mrs. Rose was held in high esteem by all who knew her, and her many friends will be pained to learn of her death.


Rosenburgh, Mrs. Adam

The funeral of Mrs. Adam Rosenburgh took place at 3 pm Sunday at the home of her son-in-law, Benjamin H. Beach, on East Bloomfield street, Rev. Dr. Peabody officiating. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Calvin Petrie, Miss Janet Price and Messars. S. Harry Beach and Stoddard M. Steven�s. The remains were taken to Rochester on the midnight train and were interred at York yesterday.


Rothmund, Margaret Klein

Rome - May 28 - Mrs. Margaret Klein Rothmund, widow of Peter Rothmond, died at 7 o'clock this evening at her beautiful new home, 811 North George Street. She had been in poor health the past three weeks and had been confined to the bed the past week. A general wearing out of the system was the cause of death. Deceased was born Nov. 16, 1826, in Ober-Seabach, Alsace, Canton Selts, France, and came to this country with her parents, three brothers and three sisters, when she was 20 years old and the family located on a farm in Verona, where she lived three years, then came to Rome when she married Peter Rothmund, who died 37 years ago. Mr. Rothmund at that time conducted a grocery and meat market on the bank of the Erie Canal, on the side of the present building of the A. Etheridge & Co., wholesale grocers. When she lived on the farm at Verona she and others used to walk to this city and return, a distance of 15 miles, to attend mass which was said by a priest at midnight in the old Mansion House, a priest coming here once in four or six weeks. She was one of the founders of the old St. Mary's Church, then located at the corner of North and James Streets, and also of the present fine edifice in West Liberty Street. For 41 years Mrs. Rothmund had lived in Rome and many were the interesting stories she could tell of the city years ago. Mrs. Rothmund had accumulated a great deal of property in this city. it was only about three years ago that she built the handsome home in North George street where she passes away, her home being one of the prettiest in that section of the city. Mrs. Rothmund was one of the best known residents. She was a very kind and charitable woman, and her many friends will learn of her death with sincere regret. Mrs. Rothmund was one of a family of 10 children, and the three following survive: Miss Carrie C., William E. and E. Otto Rothmund, all of Rome, and one brother, Martin Klein of Potter, Kas.

Camden Dec. 31 - A decoration of members of J. Parsons Stone Post, GAR, drove to McConnellsville yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral of the late Comrade William Rudy, which was held at his home near the Lehigh station. Before starting on the lone drive the veterans banded together in the Post rooms.

McConnellsville - The funeral of William Rudy was held at his home in this village yesterday afternoon. Rev. A. S. Haven delivered an excellent sermon. Music was furnished by Mrs. Frank Brewster, Mrs. Clarence Harden and Miss Nina B. Palms. J. Parsons Stone Post, of which Mr. Rudy was a worthy member, took an active part in the services. Interment was made in the village cemetery. Besides the wife, Mr. Rudy is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dick Mounders of Syracuse, Mrs. George Powell and Mrs. Homer Smith of this place, one brother, Charles Rudy of Rome and two sons, William of Gloversville and Edward of California.


Rumrill, William Frederick

Mr. & Mrs. William Rumrill, 741 Calvert Street, mourn the loss of their son, William Frederick, aged one year, five months and 14 days, who died this morning from diptheria. This is a sadly afflicted family as all four of the surviving children are ill with the same disease. The funeral was held this afternoon and interment made in Rome Cemetery.


Russell, Lyman

Camden, March 27 - News was received here late yesterday of the death of Lyman Russell of this village, which occurred yesterday afternoon in the Rome Infirmary, where he was taken more than a week ago for an operation. Mr. Russell had lived in Cemden for nearly three years, coming here from Connecticut. He is survived by a family. Since coming to Camden he had worked around in different places and had been engaged in work on the roads. Undertaker Castle went to Rome yesterday afternoon and returned with the body on the evening train.

Boonville - H. Seymour Ruth, 67, lifelong resident of Ava, died Wednesday night in a Rome hospital. he had been ill for a few days following a heart attack.

He was born in Ava, son of the late Adam and Elizabeth Reinman Ruth. In April 1901 he married Miss Kate Keller.

He leaves Mrs. Ruth, four children, Clarence and Lloyd, Miss Jessie Ruth, Ava, and Fred, Boonville, six grandchildren, two brothers, Henry and Mark, Deansboro, a sister, Mrs. Catherine Clark, Barneveld, several nieces and nephews.
