Rev. Mr. Lewis Cuts His Throat with a Razor and is Found Dead

VERNON, Nov 14 -- Vernon people were shocked Sunday morning about 11:30 oclock by reports that Rev. Mr. Lewis had been found in his barn with his throat cut and a bloody razor by his side. His son and daughter-in-law and their child had gone to church, leaving the old gentleman alone, and, during their absence he had gone to the barn and ended his unhappy life. Mr. Lewis was about 69 years old, and was highly respected , as honest, upright and kindhearted. He had lost his first wife, and about three years ago had married Miss Mary Maxwell, a fine woman, who was esteemed by the people of this town. Though poor, she had, by her own purity of character, won the respect of all and was looked upon with favor. After they were married they went to living on his farm near Verona village, and were very happy. Some of the reverend gentlemans household were opposed to the wife and looked with disfavor upon her. A separation was brought about and ever since Mr. Lewis has been failing, until stripped seemingly of all that to him was worth living for, he ended his unhappy existence in this terrible act, making a sequel which should be a warning. What might have been a long and happy old age is blasted. The sympathies of all go out to the young wife who had to leave his side and go out into the world alone and had her happiness destroyed..
