Old Burial Ground (aka Mexico Street) Cemetery

This cemetery is located on Mexico Street in the village of Camden. Many of the early settlers of Camden are buried here. Bartholomew Pond donated 3-3/4 acres of land for this cemetery. When he died in 1810 he was the first burial here. The cemetery was in use for several years but was gradually discontinued after Forest Park was purchased in 1840. Several graves from here were re-interred in Forest Park.

The cemetery is well maintained however many of the stones are badly worn, some to the point of being totally illegible. In addition to the 20 stones that were completely illegible there were approximatley 20 field stones with no inscriptions. The tombstones in this cemetey were copied by Kathleen Last and Virginia Ackerman on May 9, 2000.

Photos of many of the tombstones in the cemetery can be seen at the New York Tombstone Transcription Project website.
