Memories of Mrs. James W. Ramsey (Florence Tanner): I recollect my grandfather, William H. Tanner, owned a farm in Stanwix where feed was grown for the winter quartering of mules used to pull canal boats in the summer. He stayed there and ran the farm during the summer with his two daughters while his seven sons, Mrs. Ramsey's father, Albert Tanner, and six uncles, William, Aden, Eugene, Charles, Frederick, and Frank, worked on the Erie, five as captains and two as steermen. Mrs. Ramsey's father, a member of the Tidewater Boatman's Union, was a captain and owned three boats. Her grandfather frequently took the canal trips besides running the farm and at 82 years old he drove onto the 16 locks from Rexford to Watervliet where the boats locked into the Hudson River. The locks were a half mile apart and he walked the eight miles. She recollects that it was her grandfather's last trip and the last time she saw him alive.
