George E. Newton, 85, retired, died at 1:15 pm today at his home, 408 N. Jay St., the house in which he and Mrs. Newton resided for more than 60 years. He had been ill several years.

Mr. Newton, a millwright, was born November 11, 1852 and spent practically all his life in Rome. For a number of years he was employed by G. V. Shelden's plant and when it was moved to Florida he went with the concern. Later Mr. Newton returned to Rome and worked for E. H. Comstock Co. and the Rome Locomotive Works. he retired several years ago.

On March 14, 1876 Mr. Newton married Nettie Wallace in this city. She survives with a son, Frank Newton, a grandson George S. Newton, Madison, and a great-grandson Dennis Newton, Knoxboro.
