Charles M. Leffert Sr., 76, of 119 S. Crescent Drive, a former Police Department and Rome State School employee, was pronounced dead at Rome Hospital Wednesday after being sticken at home. Mr. Leffert served with the Police Department for 25 years, retiring as a patrolman-clerk in 1951. He then joined the staff at the Rome State School and held a supervisory position until his retirement in 1964. In 1962 he received the institution's psychiatric aide of the year award from the State Department of Mental Hygiene. A native Roman, he was born Aug. 8, 1894, son of Jacob & Edith Mansfield Leffert. He attended local schools and served with the Navy during World War I as a machinist mate second class. Active in local veterans affairs he was a past commander of Fort Stanwix Barracks, World War I Veterans, a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Rome Post Veterans of Foreign Wars and charter member of Henry P. Smith Post, American Legion. In 1966 he was named grand marshal for the Loyalty Day parade, serving that year as secretary of the Memorial Day Association. He was a past member of the Joseph Chisam Garrison, Army-Navy Union. Upon discharge from the Navy in 1919, Mr. Leffert became a machinist tool maker at Rome Locomotive Works holding that position until 1927 when he joined the Police Force. On June 2, 1921, in the First United Methodist Church, he married the former Ruth K. Cummings. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Rome Historical Society, and the Civil Service Employes Association. Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Mrs. Francis (Shirley) Murphy, and two sons, Charles M. Leffert Jr. and John J. Leffert all of Rome, 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A sister, Christine Herbst, and a brother, Frank Leffert, are deceased. Funeral services will be Saturday from Prince & Boyd Funeral Home. Interment in Rome Cemetery.
