Lauren W. Herbst Sr., 78, of 106 N. Charles St., the city's first parking meter officer, died this morning at the Rome Nursing Home after a long illness. Mr. Herbst was born here Sep. 2, 1895, a son of John and Anna Hickey Herbst. He married the former Christine Leffert Oct. 25, 1927. She died Oct. 16, 1961. He was appointed meter officer Jan. 16, 1945 and served in that capacity until his retirement Jan. 1, 1962. He had also been employed as local circulation manager for the Syracuse Post Standard and by the American Can Co. and had been secretary of the Rome Civil Service Commission. He was a member of St. Mary's Church. He leaves a son, Lauren W. Herbst Jr., Rome, four sisters, Justina Smith, Rome, Etta Rostiser, Little Falls, Helen Camadine, Rome, and Bertha Kennedy, Sherill, and two brothers, Arthur and Fred Herbst, both of Rome. Funeral services will be Friday at Griffin & Aldridge with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery.
