Melvin C. Carpenter, 61, of RD 5, Tannery rd., died Saturday in his home after suffering a heart attack. A life-long Roman, he was born Jan. 25, 1903, son of Cyrus and Edith Mansfield Carpenter, and attended Rome Schools. On Dec. 28, 1925, he married Stasia Smith in St. Peter's Church, with the late Rev. Msgr. James J. Carson officiating. Mr. Carpenter had been an electrician in the Maintenance Dept. of Revere's Rome Manufacturing Co. Division for more than 22 yrs. he was a member of St. Mary's church and the Stanwix Men's Club.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Mrs. Ansel e. (Edith) Carrier and Mrs. Alfred (Mary) Eastup, both of Rome, eight sons, Edward S., James C. and Bernard G., all of Rome, twins, GM3 Richard P. with the Navy in the South Pacific and Robert P., Camden, SSgt. Cornelius M. with the Air Force in California, Pfc Dennis W. with the Army in Minnesota, four half-brothers, Charles and Frank Leffert and Lyman Carpenter, all of Rome, and Kenneth Carpenter, California, two half-sisters, Miss Alice Shanley and Mrs. Edward (Margaret) Finster, both of Rome, a step-brother Ralph Shanley of Rome and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 8:45 am Wednesday at the Martin J. Nunn Funeral Home. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
