The Watertown Times has been interviewing Uncle John" Dingman, of Chaumont. He says that he will be 104 years old if he lives until April 17, 1883. H says he had quit wrestling, is now hurraying for the Democracy and is going to vote for the next Democratic presidential nominee. He was asked if he could give something of his early history and replied: Oh yes, I can give you pretty near all about the battle of Sackets Harbor and how I came to go to Chaumont. I was 33 yrs old when I enlisted in the US service for the then pending war of 1812, for which I now draw a pension. It was in the village of Lee in Oneida County, NY. A. D. Rudd was the name of my captain, as near as I can remember. We had orders from the army headquarters to go to Adams, Jefferson county and I remember that our Captain Rudd had command of three companies, but why I can not now tell. I frequently had access to Sackets Harbor on a pass. My time was out directly after the English landed in their what I call "gill-net" boats, at that point just beyond the big bluff at the Harbor. I remember being a vidette. I think that was about the worst idea of advancement, beyond a picket. When the English landed, one of their sergeants had command of a sort of picket squad, and as they advanced the US videttes fired into them. I can remember of their immediately turning and running toward their "gill-net" boats and our army picking up thier heels and scooting for the woods, thinking that the English had a large fleet stationed at Six Town Point, in Henderson Bay. The English at the same time carried the idea that the US soldiers had (illegible) a powerful army in the woods. So thus ended the battle of Sackets Harbor.

The Chaumont Centennarian - Uncle John Dingman, the well-known fisherman of Chaumont, Jeff. County, was 100 years old yesterday. From the Bible of his brother-in-law, John Barke, [Jared Burk] of Lewis county, the centennarian copied the record of his birth last week. It reads: "John Dingman was born the 13th day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sevnty-nine at Amsterdam, NY." To a reporter of the Watertown Dispatch he said "I have lived in Chaumont over seventy years. When I came here this whole region was a howling wilderness, with ague so thick that you could almost see it in the air; wolves were plenty and there was no end to the deer. There was only three houses here, one on the village side of the stone bridge and two on the other. The old Chaumont House was being built by the Quakers and was up as high as the windows. Ciscoes were considered worthless then; we cared only for white fish and trout. With a five-rod seine in nine consecutive nights I have caught 110 barrels of white fish. It is thirty years since I kept the stone tavern; since then I have lived on this farm. My health is as good as it was fifteen years ago for all I can see. Oh, I am good for twenty years yet. I won't take the temperance pledge. No sir, I won't sign away my rights for no man. I like to take a whirl myself now and then with the boys."

Dingman Point now gaining popularity as summer resort was first settled by Jerred Dingman in 1845.

By Ernest G. Cook

Dingman Point, located about -----half miles down the St. Lawrence river from Alexandria Bay and just now coming into popularity as a summer resort, was named from the pioneer, Jerred Dingman, who located there when it was a wilderness and who made the first clearing on the Point, building the first log house. Jerred Dingman has seven children of whom only one is living, Jason Dingman, now in his 82nd. year. From him we obtained this story of the family. Our people were from Holland and my father was a youthful carpenter down at Lee Center, near Rome, when he decided to pick a location where there was cheaper land and greater opportunities for a carpenter in building up a new community. He was born about 1819, I think, and married about the year 1841. The oldest child, John, was born Nov. 4, 1843, In 1845 my father came north and bought 50 acres of wilderness land on that point in the river just above Goose Bay. I know it was all wilderness there because I have heard my father tell that he had to cut the road through the woods for over a mile to get to where he wanted his house at the spot overlooking the river. He bought only 50 acres at that time as he expected to do carpenter work for his main living. And father did get a lot of work to do, as some of the building booms at the Bay came in his day. He helped to build the Thousand Island House and was employed by many of the island owners to build their homes, including Mr. Boldt in the work on Hart Island.

Dingman Point now gaining popularity as summer resort, as first settled by Jerred Dingman in 1845,

By Ernest G. Cook

(Interview with Jason Dingman) I want to mention my oldest brother, John, born Nov. 4, 1843, because he became captain of the first steam yacht ever to sail the waters of the Thousand Islands. He was captain of the Reindeer for a term of years. And I want to speak of another incident that I well remember. John was twelve years older than I and when I was about 13, John had charge of certain large wood contracts which Azariah Walton, the man who owned with Mr. Cornwell, most of the islands at one time, had with the steamboats. That is Mr. Walton would have wood but in the winter and piled up on the important docks for the big steamboats, and John had the job of seeing this wood was ----- ------- out and loaded on the docks. I have helped load up those -------boats such as the Ontario, the Cataract and the old Bay State. I remember we used to get on the boat and maybe have our supper, if the run was at that time, as we came down the river to a wood dock on our point. The boat would tie up and the men would start loading on the wood for the ship to burn. I have seen them put on as high as 30 cords of wood to burn, hardly ever less than 25 cords. Those big boats had long runs from Ogdensburg some as far as Chicago on the west.

Dingman Point Now Gaining Popularity as Summer Resort, Was First Settled by Jerred Dingman in 1845.

By Ernest G. Cook

(Interview with Jason Dingman)

I married Jan. 13, 1880 Ida J. Sheldon when I was 25. I had been a helper on my father's farm. My work was to take a rowboat in the summer season and row four miles night and morning delivering milk to the cottages. That eight miles rowing night and morning was extra to my day's work. And I don't recall that I ever missed a single trip because of storm. But I have gone when my boat seemed to be lost as we went down in the trough of the waves. I don't recall that I was ever afraid if I had a good boat. In the spring of 1884 I decided to farm it for myself and bought this place just south of Redwood. There was 100 acres of land and I was selling milk for 60 cents a hundred at the cheese factory. But we had whey for the raising of hogs, and I used to raise a couple of colts each year to sell when older, - a good market then - and I actually had more money clear then than now. I bought the second farm and paid for it. I was the first to take a daily paper when I came here - the Watertown Times - and I have always had it ever since. Today there is not a Dingman on Dingman's Point. My children are; George, born Aug. 19, 1881; Arthur, born Oct. 16, 1883; Vinson, born July 11, 1886; Clarence, born Oct. 9, 1888.
