The workmen employed at Sandholme ironworks met at the Golden Lion Hotel to make a presentation to their foreman, Mr. Smith Barker of Industrial Street. A substantial knife and fork tea was partaken of by a company of about 30. Mr. T. Lord afterwards made the presentation consisting of a silver mounted walking stick, a meerschaum pipe, and tobacco pouch; the walking stick bore the inscription “Presented to Mr. Smith Barker as a token of respect from his fellow workpeople.” Mr. Barker, his wife and 3 children, set sail for America on the 6th where he had previously spent about 17 years. During the time his parents kept the General Havelock Arms, Salford, Mr. Barker served his apprenticeship with Messrs Astin & Barker’s ironworks.
