MOUNT
ZION UNITED FREE METHODIST CHURCH
CORNHOLME
|
The
chapel is linked closely with the Wilson family from Wilson's Bobbin
Works at Cornholme and it was mainly through the family's efforts
that the church was built in 1854.

A
report in the Rochdale Sentinel, Saturday February 25th 1854 says:
A
Chapel Blows Down
On
Friday night last about 6 o'clock, the chapel now in course of
erection at Cornholme near Todmorden, for the use of the Wesleyan
Methodists Association, was partly blown down. The foundation
stone, it will be remembered, was laid on Whit Tuesday May 17th
1853, when the members of that body walked in procession on the
occasion. It was at first thought, from the shattered appearance
of the building and the front entrance being almost down, with
some stonework beautifully executed, that the damage would be
very serious, but from enquiry of the architect, we are glad to
state that about £60 will probably cover the expense. The
falling of the building is attributable entirely to the boisterous
state of the weather on Friday night; we had a complete hurricane.
The chapel was about ready for covering in.
|
|
|
|
|
On 10th March 1867, there was another disastrous fire at the chapel. It was a Sunday morning and was noticed first by a Mr. Greenwood who ran immediately to raise the alarm. The first on the scene was a mechanic employed by Messrs. L. Wilson and Sons, bobbin manufacturers. He ran to the bobbin works and procured an extinguisher from the factory. He was forced to abandon his efforts as the blaze was too strong. |
|
|
|
The fire engine from the bobbin works arrived and a hose was placed through a window, but the hose broke. Another one was attached but that also broke. The only thing the firemen could do was take the engine closer to the chapel, which was no easy task as the chapel was perched on a steep slope, and of course, the engine was horse-drawn. By this time, Mr. J. H. Wilson had arrived and he bravely entered the chapel and threw water on the burning wood until the fire engine was working properly.
The chapel was heated by means of a stove underneath the vestry, the warm water being carried into the chapel by flues. The fire was lit as usual on the Saturday night, and it was thought the stove may have over heated and caused the blaze. Over the vestry was the orchestra, and the flames spread to the floor of this part of the building, and from there to the roof.
The vestry and orchestra and their contents were destroyed, the seats and the roof were badly blistered, and the strength of the heat broke most of the windows. The harmonium and about £15's worth of music books were destroyed. The register of baptisms and the plan of the grave yard were likewise destroyed, although the Treasurer's books survived as they were not in the building at the time. The total damage was estimated at £200
|
|
|
The
chapel closed in 1968 and the congregation moved next door to the
school, which closed in 1985 due to structural damage. The
building is now derelict and in ruins. The stone walls are intact
up to about 6 feet high, and it is possible to enter the area where
the church stood. |
|
The
Wilson family is commemorated on the obelisk facing the entrance
to the chapel |

Within
the ruins of the chapel, there is a surprising find. It is a white
marble war memorial, still intact, set in to the stone wall. |
|
|
The
names have been transcribed and researched by Capt. J.T. Collins
and we are grateful for his permission to publish his findings.
He was unable to find details of some of the men whose names appear
on the memorial, but these are now available thanks to the interest
and research of Philip Dawes. |
