A selection of Memorial Inscriptions

The burial ground is intact and boasts a beautiful location. The ground is still used for burials today and is in reasonable condition. A small sample of memorial inscriptions is shown below, some with photographs:

Rev. Joseph Tanner Sanger of Todmorden in Langfield, the Superintendent Preacher for the time being of the Circuit in the Methodist Connection in which the plot of ground and hereditaments hereinafter described were situated, of the 3rd part.

Of and concerning all that plot of land as the same was then marked or set out, being part of a close called the Higher Broad Croft, situate and lying at or near Mankinholes in Langfield aforesaid, the estate of the said William Ingham, which said plot extended on the north easterly side thereof one hundred and seven feet, on the north westerly side thereof three hundred and two feet, on the southerly side thereof three hundred and two feet, and on the south westerly side thereof fifty nine feet, and including the site of the fence on the north easterly side thereof contained in the whole by admeasurement 2,773 superficial square yards of land or ground or thereabouts, and the same plot was bounded on the north easterly and north westerly sides by other parts of the said Close, on the southerly side partly by land belonging to William Ingham esquire of Castle Lodge and partly by Mankinholes Chapel and Chapel Yard, and on the south westerly side by Broad Gate Road, and which said plot was more particularly delineated on the plan indorsed on the now memorialising Indenture and therein coloured Pink.

And also full right and liberty to make a covered drain from the south westerly side of the said plot of land. And full right and liberty to make a covered drain the north easterly side of the said plot of land into the said close called Back Broad Croft, the said drains respectively to be of such depth and length as might be requisite for the purpose of effectually conveying any water arising on the said plot of land and in the adjoining cemetery or burial ground and premises into the said lane or the said close of land called Back Broad Croft.

And also right and liberty from time to time when necessary to open cleanse and rerpair the said drains respectively on paying reasonable compensation for all damages done to the herbage or crops on the said close, and so that any requisite consent of the Surveyors of Highways of Langfield aforesaid be obtained as regarded the said Broadgate Road.

And also full right and liberty to enter the residue of the said close for the purpose of erecting and from time to time repairing the fence thereinafter covenanted to be made on paying such reasonable compensation as aforesaid. Together with all and singular houses and outhouses, edifices, buildings, yards, gardens, trees, mounds, mines, quarries, fences, hedges, ditches, sewers, drains, paths, passages, ways, waters, watercourses, lights, liberties, privileges, easements, profits, commodities, emoluments and appurtenances.

Which said Indentures as to execution by William Ingham was witnessed by James Stansfield of Todmorden in the County of Lancaster, solicitor and Thomas Sutcliffe of Mankinholes warehouseman aforesaid.

As to execution by Gilbert Lacy was witnessed by William Mather of Todmorden in the County of York, attorneys clerk and Abraham Midgley Higgin of Overtown nr Burnley in the county of Lancaster attorneys clerk.

The witness to execution by the other parties was the said William Mather - The document was required to be Registered at Wakefield by Gilbert Lacy.

Of and concerning all and singular all that reversion and inheritance in fee simple of and in all that plot of land situate at the West corner of a field called Broad Croft in the township of Langfield, aforesaid, the property of the said James Knowles which said plot of land contained in length from East to West 18 yards 2 feet and from North to South 13 and a half yards, and also the chapel or preaching house and other erections thereon built, which said premises as to the boundaries, bearings and admonitions are more particularly delineated and described in the plan drawn in the margin of a certain Indenture bearing date the 11 th July 1833, and therein coloured Yellow, and all that plot of land also a parcel of the said field called Broad Croft, situate on and adjoining to the southerly side of the said plot of land thereinbefore firstly described, and which said last mentioned plot of land contained in length from East to West 17 yards and 16 inches, and in breadth at the back or easterly side thereof 9 yards and on the other or west side thereof 7 yards 1 foot and 7 inches, and also the schoolroom and other buildings then erecting thereon, and which said lastly described premises as to the boundaries, bearings and admonisions were more particularly delineated on the plan and thereon coloured Red, and also a liberty to erect a ladder on the adjoining lands late of the said James Knowles, for the purpose of repairing the said Chapel and buildings, and secondly all that piece or parcel of land situate at Mankinholes in Langfield, part of a field called Broad Croft, and contains on the northerly side thereof 25 feet and 6 inches, and is bounded on that side by Mankinholes Chapel graveyard, and contains on the easterly side thereof 69 feet and is bounded on that side by other land of the said John Arthur Ingham, and contains of the southerly side 22 feet and 6 inches, and is bounded on that side by plots of land comprised and assigned by the said indenture of the 11 th July 1833, and also the Chapel and buildings erected thereon, which said plot of land secondly hereinbefore described and expressed and intended to be hereby granted is delineated and coloured Pink in the map or Plan indorsed on the now memorialising Indenture. Together with the appurtenances to the same belonging.

And which said indentures as to execution by John Arthur Ingham is witnessed by John Edwin Craven of Todmorden, solicitor and William Boid (sic) of the same place, his clerk

Witnesses to execution by John Arthur Ingham were John Arthur Ingham junior solicitor of Todmorden and H.M. Ingham of 15 Cross Street, Manchester stockbroker.
