All
Saints church, now demolished, was located at Harley Wood,
Lydgate in Todmorden. It was said at the time of its erection
that its style of architecture and general appearance, externally
and internally, did credit to the architect, James Green
of Portsmouth House, Todmorden. It accommodated about 400
people.
The
first stone of All Saints was laid by William Helliwell
of Kitson Wood House. The church was first opened on Wednesday
6th October 1858 by the Vicar of Halifax, the Ven. Archdeacon
Musgrave. The curate in charge was the Rev. Frederick Gardiner
who read the prayers, assisted by the vicar of St. Paul's
at Cross Stone, the Rev. Mallinson.

Charles
and George Mears of Whitechapel, London, cast a small clock
bell weighing 1cwt. for All Saints. The clock was made in
1860 by Joyce's of Whitchurch, Shropshire. |

On 25th October 1873, the following article appeared in the Leeds Mercury:
Fire at a church in Todmorden
Early on Monday morning it was discovered that the porch of All Saints Church, Harley Wood near Todmorden, was in flames. The roof of the porch was entirely destroyed and the damage is estimated at from £50 to £100. The cause of the fire can only be guessed at. The gas was left burning after the service on Sunday night, and one supposition is that as the night advanced the pressure of gas increased until eventually the heat from the light ignited the timbers of the roof. Another supposition is that there was an escape of gas, and the porch becoming filled, it was ignited by the light and the timbers thus fired.

This
bell was rescued from Harley Wood by the Todmorden Bell
Ringers, just before the church was demolished. It
was fully restored and converted to electric winding
in 1989 and is situated in the tower at St. Mary's. |
|
|
|
The
church and school were demolished in 1975 and the land sold
off for housing.

The
war memorial was moved to St. Mary's when the church was
due for demolition and is currently located in the grounds
of the church.
