Obit of JOSEPH BURTON MARTIN
(b. 1825 Wilson Co. TN d. 1905 Collin Co. TX)

J. B. Martin died Monday at 6:30 o'clock at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. W.D. Goosetree on North Tennessee street. He has
been in feeble health for several years, and about three weeks
ago suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he never recovered.
Mr. Martin was a native of Tennessee, being born in Wilson County
on December 18, 1825, and was in his eightieth year. After
completing his education he chose school teaching as a profession,
and followed it for over forty years in the county in which he
was born. He chose for his life companion Miss Caroline Chambliss,
a young lady with whom he was raised, their marriage taking place
February 21, 1848. She survives him. Twelve children were born to
them, four of whom are dead, and eight living, as follows:
Medames W. D. Goosetree and S. V. Ausborn, Andrew and J. H Martin,
McKinney; Mrs. J. C. Ivey, near Princeton (Tx); Mrs. H. H. and M.
Bradshaw, Brookston, Lamar County, Tx; Judge Berry Martin,
Lebanon, Tenn. Joe L. Martin died in Tenn.
Some two years ago. Mrs. William Bass, who resided east of
McKinney, died five years ago, and two children died in infancy.
There are fifty-one grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
The deceased was one of a family of eight children, one brother
and three sisters surviving; Captain Jim Martin and Mrs. Madeline
Whitescaver of Lebanon, Tenn.; Mrs. Mary Lockett , Nashville,
Tenn. And Mrs. Lucy Robinson, Marietta Ga.
Mr. Martin and his wife came to Texas in 1889 and located at
Vineland where they lived seven years. They have made their home
in McKinney and among their children since 1896. The deceased
united with the Christian Church in 1862, and has lived a
consistent member all of his life. He held membership at
Hackberry, situated north of McKinney. He was a man well liked by
everybody who knew him, his death will be universally regretted.
The funeral took place this afternoon, the procession leaving the
house at 2 o'clock. The services, conducted by Rev. J.M. Burrow,
pastor Cumberland Presbyterian Church, were held at the Scott
Cemetery, six miles northwest of McKinney, at 4 o'clock, where
interment was made.
Joseph Burton Martin died August 14, 1905.
