The 7th Tennessee Infantry Regiment

The following information is from: John Berrien Lindsley, The Military Annals of Tennessee, (Spartanburg, SC, Reprint Co., 1974 [c1886]) pp. 227-264, with the 33 page history of the Seventh Tennessee written by J. H. Moore, Centreville, TN, a member of the 7th Tennessee.
A brief summary of the 7th Tennessee Regiment
The 7th Tennessee was armed with Mississippi rifles for the first two years of the war. These were replaced by
Springfield and Enfield rifles.
25 May 1861
Seventh Tennessee was organized at Camp Trousdale, in Sumner County. They drilled 6 hours a day to mid July. The First Tennessee Brigade was formed
of the 1st, 7th, and 14th Regiments.
First TN brigade was ordered to Richmond, but with Confederate victory at Manassas, the orders were changed to join Gens. Lee and Loring.
Sep. 1861
First TN brigade marched to Big Springs and campaign on Cheat Mountain, WV, suffering small losses. They then joined Gen. Floyd in Kanawha Valley,
and then went to the Shenandoah Valley, Gen. Stonewall Jackson in command.
Seventh TN assigned to division under Gen. Loring.
During the Winter they went to Bath and Winchester, then Yorktown by way of Fredericksburg. There were small skirmishes and losses in the move
from Yorktown to Richmond.
31 May 1862
Battle of Seven Pines
Held in reserve till about 6 p.m. and ordered to reinforce Longstreet and Hill. Tennessee Brigade made final assault on Sumner's corps at sunset.
In 30 minutes Adjutant G. A. Howard, 8 of 10 company commanders, and half of the privates were either killed or wounded.
Assigned to position near Richmond again. Col. Archer of Fifth Texas made Brigadier-general of Tennessee Brigade, and they assigned to the
division of A. P. Hill.

Made two assaults both repulsed with severe loss. With arrival of reinforcements, the third assault resulted in taking every position of
the Union.

Second Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)
Not engaged on first day. Second day repulsed three assaults on their position, then charged,
and Union driven from position. Third day drove Union from position.
Heavy losses.

Harper's Ferry
First day captured Bolivar Height for artillery. Second day just beginning to move when garrison surrendered.

Antietam
Arrived late, advanced on Union which had forced their way across Antietam Creek, and drove them back into the creek. The 7th had been reduced by
killed, wounded, sick and straggling to less than 100 men, of which more than 30 were killed and wounded here.

Held position, charged and routed Federal postition. Overall confederate losses small, but most heavy among the 7th and 14th.

Battle of Chancellorsville
Arrived late on first day. Second day not engaged. Third day, mistaken order led to Tennessee Brigade capturing high position,
for artillery. After artillery assault, third infantry assault drove
Union from Chancellor House.
Tennessee Brigade came under command of Gen. H. H. Heth as corp commander.
1-3 July 1863
Gettysburg
1st day involved in initial combat. 2nd day, held in reserve. 3rd day Heth's division part of "Pickett's Charge." 5000 men of Heth's
division engaged, only about 1800 after battle.
