CORRECTIONS TO Jacob Sherrill, Son of Adam and Elizabeth and Some of Their Descendants by William Andrew Sherrill, 1983.)

From letter, dated Christmas 1990, Virgil Prichard to VLT:

On page 133 of Bill Sherrill's genealogy it states that the mother and father of Annie Thomas were Joseph Thomas and Margaret Brevard. I think you can safely change that to Jacob Thomas and Margaret Brevard. I became suspicious about that information last year when I was in Utah. At that time I thought the mistake might be on Margaret Brevard's side. However, having corresponded with the people from whom he obtained the information and with others in North Carolina, I have now decided that Jacob and Margaret were our ancestors. Wanda Clark, whose name is listed as having provided the information states that she mistakenly recorded that information. Joseph was indeed a brother of Jacob but not Margaret's husband. On page 46 of that genealogy, Elizabeth Thomas is given as SAMUEL WILSON SHERRILL'S wife. That is correct but you may wish to record that she was a sister of Annie and, therefore, also the daughter of Jacob and Margaret. (Lots of inbreeded in our family but has it affected us much ???)

The following are excerpts from a manuscript provided by Wanda L. Clark.

It is presumed that Samuel Wilson Sherrill was the first born child of Jacob Sherrill and Hulda(h) Wilson since he was born approximately four months before his father's nineteenth birthday. Also, at this time, no earlier proven birth date is available for any of their children. Samuel Wilson Sherrill, the first Sherrill to be so named in the line of Jacob and Hulda, was born March 21, 1758, in North Carolina, in one of the counties in the area where his family settled.

He married Elizabeth Thomas on January 11, 1782, probably in Rowan County, North Carolina. James Thomas went his bond. Her parentage has not been determined but it appears that James Thomas was a close relative.5 In the Lincoln County, North Carolina records, there appears a deed showing that Samuel W. Sherrill sold 70 acres of land to Isaac Litton on May 21, 1797. He sold 90 acres of land to Wesley Litton, on May 29, 1797, and 300 acres to Andrew Miller on January 13, 1798. It seems reasonable to assume that it was shortly after this that he and his family, together with his father and mother and brothers and sisters, except Jacob Sherrill, Jr. and his family moved to Wilson County, Tennessee. As far as is known, he moved about two miles southwest of what is now the town of Lebanon, Tennessee, immediately upon arriving from North Carolina. He settled on Barton's Creek, and about 1800 built the first house there. He remained on his land for the rest of his life.

Samuel Wilson Sherrill and Elizabeth, his wife, had eleven known children. The first, named Hugh, died in infancy. The tenth they also named Hugh (e). It is believed that they added the terminal "e" to distinguish between the two boys. Most of the information on the eleven children was recorded in an old family Bible in the possession of Robert William Sherrill, Lebanon, Tennessee, in 1967.6 Mrs. Acklin also recorded the information from the Bible in her book. I have in my possession the following document:

Tennessee Cousins by Hayes has this to say:
Fletcher Sullivan died near Gladeville on 20 Nov 1817. His age was not given, but his wife, Mary, was born in 1750 and died in 1822. Archibald Sherrill, born 1786, obtained a license to marry Fletcher's daughter, Sally Sullivan. Nowhere have we been able to discover where this marriage took place, or even if it did.

Archibald Sherrill was first buried on the old Shorter Place, near Gladeville, Tennessee, but about 1957 one of his grandsons, Edgar Bomar Sherrill, had his remains removed from that abandoned cemetery (His tombstone was the only one left standing) to the Sherrill Family cemetery at Gladeville, Tennessee.

The man who removed his remains said that only his skull with all teeth in perfect condition and his leg bone below the knee were all that was left. He also said that Archibald must have been 6 feet 4-7 inches tall, judging by that leg bone, since he, himself, was a few inches over 6 feet and the leg bone was a couple of inches longer than his own. He also said that Archibald's skull was massive but well formed.

Dr. Hugh N. Sherrill described his father as follows: "My father was about 6 feet high, erect, square built, smooth features and fair skin, a man of decided convictions, careful on taking a stand on any subject, but once settled he remained firm. I think as perfect a type of true nobleman as the world ever produced."

The tract of land upon which was built the home of Archibald Sherrill was first patented to General Andrew Jackson on March 7, 1796, by the State of North Carolina and by him was sold to Archibald Sherrill, 22 September 1815 and was later owned by Samuel Wilson Sherrill, Archibald's oldest son.

The information regarding the land is by Jane Katherine Sherrill Armijo and is dated September 8, 1966.

It is on this property that Samuel Wilson Sherrill, established his family cemetery, Title to this family cemetery remains in the hands of the members of the Sherrill family who are descendants of Archibald Sherrill. It is here that, Samuel Wilson Sherrill III, and his father Archibald Sherrill are buried. This property is located near Gladeville, TN. Archibald's monument in the Sherrill Cemetery at Gladeville, TN reads as follow:
