Hardin Davis Chappell
Hardin Davis Chappell was born in Davis county, Kentucky, December
23rd, 1844, and at the age of 23 he was married to Mollie Ann
Barker. Ten children were born to them, six boys and four girls,
twenty-nine grand children and 14 great-grandchildren. In 1889 he
came to Clay county Arkansas, and on the 30th of November, 1892, his
first wife died. In 1893 he was married to Sallie Wells, and she
died on the 4th of July, 1914. He next married Mrs. Girlie Owens and
they lived together until his death on the 13th day of May 1927. His
age was 82 years, four months and twenty-one days. He was a Civil
war veteran on the Confederate side. In 1907 he affiliated with
Pleasant Grove Baptist church having been a member of the church
long before joining here.
Survivors are his wife and five children, O. Chappell of Corning,
Mrs. Robert Plough of Moark, Fred Chappell of Palatka, Minor
Chappell of Knobel, Ark., and Mrs. Renna Cradic of Greenville, Mo.
His remains were laid to rest in Black Cemetery near Palatka. A
large number of friends from Corning attended his funeral.

The Cart Family Comes to America
Born Han Justus Heyd in 1687 (called Jost Heyd or Hite); Justus was also known as 'The Old German Baron', though not recorded as such. We speculate that it was a title in recognition of his position as a leader or an expression of his bossiness.
In 1709, seeking a better home and economic prospects in America, he and his father, and their families joined over 13,000 other Germans making their way to Rotterdam and then to London. In 1710 about one-fifth of the 13,000 came to New York. This was the largest single group of immigrants in colonial times. Jost Heyd / Hite and his wife and family were among those who reached this land.
A background study shows that between June 13 and August 2, 1710, ten English vessels brought 2,378 immigrants to New York. These immigrants were Germans; Swiss; and, Dutch. In the early 1700s there were already many Pennsylvania Dutch in the New World; and an extensive campaign was taking place along the Rhine to obtain colonists for America.
Jost Heyd came to America in his own ships - the Brigantine Swift and the Schooner Friendship.
It may be mistakenly thought that these ships were totally owned by Jost Heyd. The sixteen families that came with him on the two ships bought shares for the voyage. The connection with this voyage is the Chappell ancestors were a part of the sixteen families. Elizabeth Heyd, first daughter of Jost Heyd, married ______ Forman. Paul Forman, son of Elizabeth Heyd Forman and _____ Forman, had a daughter, Mary Forman. Mary Forman, daughter of Paul Forman, married William Myers. Mary Forman and William Myers then had a daughter, Harriet Ann Myers. Harriet Ann Myers married Lewis Cart and they had a daughter - Mary Jane (Polly) Cart. Mary Jane Cart married Charles Arvil Chappell.
By 1714 Jost purchased land in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, near Skippack Creek and later a larger tract of land further west on the Perkiomen shore. There he built his home and a gristmill. This he sold in 1730 and acquired rights to 140,000 acres of land in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Justus (Jost) Heyd married Anna-Maria Merckle, daughter of Abraham Merckle and Anna Veronica on November 11, 1704. Their first daughter, Elizabeth, was born in America.
historic note:
Heyd's descendants left many structures (some still standing) in the Shenandoah Valley. The most famous is Belle Grove, Middletown, VA, built by Isaac Heyd, grandson of Jost Heyd. It is about 15 miles southwest of Winchester and is in the Historic Register. James and Dolly Madison visited Belle Grove on their honeymoon. Isaac Heyd, Jr. was married to a sister of James Madison.
Col. John Heyd, oldest son of Jost Heyd, on the site where Jost Heyd first settled, built Springdale in 1753. Also found there are: the Bowman House; Froman House; and, the Chrisman's Spring. Owners of these were the daughters of Jost Heyd and Anna-Maria Magdalena Nuschanger Heyd. Near by is the Heyd graveyard. There were eight children born to Jost and Maria Heyd.
On April 8, 1728, an attack by eleven Indians was repulsed by a group of German
families. Two of the settlers were wounded. It was speculated that this incident
led to Heyd's decision to leave Pennsylvania.
On August 5, 1731 Heyd purchased 40,000 acres from John VanMeter and was allotted another 100,000 acres by the Council of Virginia, contingent on them securing 100 settlers within two years. 1732 is given as the date Heyd moved his family to Virginia.
Anna-Maria Merckle Heyd died in 1738. Heyd then married Maria Magdalena
Nuschanger. Jost Heyd died in 1761. His burial place is unknown.
January 9, 1730 was listed as Josh Heyd's next acquisition of land in Virginia. A
total of sixteen families accompanied Heyd and his wife Maria, along with their
family. Not all the sixteen families were named. Some of them were: McKay,
Green, Duff, and Stephens.
The settlers lived in wagons. Some of them built huts for shelter. It was also
known that there was a scarcity of necessities and provisions. It was said that
Jost Heyd was the first white man to settle in the Shenandoah Valley.
The Fairfax Controversy
About 1736 Charles II of England decided to find out what land he owned. He came to Virginia and appointed a commission to review the boundaries of his property. He decided that the headwaters of the Potomac, west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, was his boundary. The settlers of the Shenandoah Valley were within his grant. He required they pay him quit-rent. Jost Heyd brought suit against him.
The head of the commission, Fairfax, had his grant surveyed. One of the surveyors was George Washington. This survey showed that Charles II owned about 5,000,000 acres, including the acreage Jost Heyd had obtained from the Council of Virginia. Not until 1786 (after both Jost Heyd and Charles II were dead) was the suit settled in favor of Jost Heyd.

Kentucky Native, 83, Ill Nine Weeks
Onnie Chappell, 83, 131_ St. died at 9o'clock Tuesday night in the
home of his daughter, Mrs. Arvid Johnson, after nine weeks of
illness.
Mr. Chappell was born Oct. 17, 1870, in Kentucky. He came to
Rockford from Corning, Arkansas. He married the former Callie
Brannum in February, 1916. She died in 1936.
Mr. Chappell was employed by the Mechanics Universal Joint company
for 23 years. He was a member of the Evangelical Free Church for a
quarter of a century; Masonic Lodge No. 102_, Rockford; Freeport
Consistory; Corning, Arkansas Consistory; and a 32nd degree Mason.
Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Lillie Willison, Mrs.
Clarence Holmes, Mrs. Arvid Johnson, and Mrs. Zetta Hallman all of
Rockford; two sons, Dudley Chappell, Chicago and Gurry Chappell,
Freeport; 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild; brother, Fred Chappell, Corning, two
sisters, Mrs. Rhoda Plough, Corning, and Mrs. Rena Craddick,
Missouri.
Servies will be Saturday in the Russell Ermert funeral home in
Corning, with the Rev. Hubert Johnson officiating. Burial will be at
Black's Cemetery, Corning. Friends may call at the Wilbur
Christenson funeral home, 9___ Avenue from 7 to 8o'clock Thursday.
