Letter to Sam Golliday from James Everett

Letter from Dr. James Lassiter Everett
to Sam Goliday
submitted by Chuck Everett

Below is a letter (I have the original) from Dr. James Lassiter Everett to Mr. Sam Goliday (evidently a lawyer in Lebanon). The letter is type written. I have copied the letter as typed, lack of punctuation included. In brackets I have supplied additional names and information.

Mr. Sam Goliday,

Lebanon, Tenn

Dear Sir:
Your letter just rec'd content noted, will say this to you and Jess [Everett, a brother to Dr. Everett] that I am very sorry that Jess is compelled to bring suit in court to get his rights for taking care of father [Thomas E. Everett] in his old age it is nothing but just and right that Jess should have pay for it, and C. [Everett, a brother to Dr. Everett] ought to be made to pay it out of the estate for C. got one thousand dollars more than either of the children to take care of father in his declinging years and of course you will find out that he did not do it at all. Dr. John Curd, Jno Goodall, Bill Ligon made the division and all parties were well pleased with the division of the estate. Dr. Jno Curd and Jno Goodall are still living. C. got to treating father so bad after C. was married that father told me often that he could not stand it I told him to kick C. out and stay at the old home place that he had enough to keep him up as long as he lived, and C. was an ungratefuly boy to treat him as he did. Tom [Everett, another brother of Dr. Everett] told me and I don't believe will deny it that C. was not treating father right and Tom gets father to go and stay with him and Father told me after hwe was with Tom awhile that Tom treated him as bad as C did and told father to leave his house and father was forced then to go to live with Jess, Jess ought to be paid for taking care of father and C ought to pay it as father gave him one thousand dollars to take care of him and he did not do it, surely Tom and C have got to much manhood about them to let such a thing as that go in court undestand after the division was made for the old home place to be divided between myself, Jess and C. father taken off from me and Jess 35 or 40 acres out of our part to still support him as long as he lived. Jess sold his interest out to C. father kept my part of his support and to help keep him up as long as he lived which I am proud of, and if it takes all I have there to pay father's expenses I am willing for it to go that way, and if there isn't enough there I am willing to pay my prorata of the deficiency.

Yours truly,

Dr. J. L. Everett
