In the name of God Amen: I Thomas GROVES of the State of Tennessee and County of Sumner being of sound and perfect mind and memory do this the twenty fifth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fourteen make and publish this my last will and testament in the manner following that is to say.
First
I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Eady GROVES and my son John GROVES jointly the
plantation whereon I now live, containing two hundred and ninety acres, together with all the
planation tools, a wagon, one bay mare, a gray mare two years old, and a yearling horse colt,
four cows and calves, twenty hogs, such as may be their choice, two _ and lambs, and the _. Also
I give and bequeath to the above named Eady GROVES and John GROVES a negro man named
Peter and a Negro woman named Holly: the whole of _ property or the remainder thereof is to _
to the above named John GROVES at the death or marriage of the above named Eady GROVES,
together with all household furniture _ hereafter named.
Second
I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas GROVES the hundred acres of land where he now lives
_ this more or less. A negro boy named Ephrian and a good bed and furniture.
Thirdly
I give and bequeath unto Allen GROVES fifty acres of land adjoining Christopher WOODALL
and James _ also fifty acres more adjoining ____ as has been marked- Also a bay horse? with
white face four years old- also a set of C? tools
Fourthly
I give and bequeath unto my daughter Gilly? GRAINGER and her children a Negro girl named
Mary :
Fifthly
I give and bequeath to my Daughter Betsy Negro Girl named Nancy , also a good bed and
furniture and a black walnut chest a horse saddle and bridle, which property or the remainder
thereof, if she the above named Betsy shall die without an heir of her own body Shall be divided
among the whole of my children
Sixthly
I give and bequeath to my daughter Rhoda a good bed and furniture, a black walnut chest a hours
saddle and bridle - Also a negro woman named B?, whose first child after it is two years old is to
become the property of my son David, the whole of which property( _t? the child) or the
remainder thereof , if she the above named mentioned Rhoda shall die without a heir of her own
body shall be divided among the whole of my children.
Seventhly
I give and bequeath to my daughter Polly a negro boy named Haddison.
Eightly
I give and bequeath to my daughter Sally or he lawful heir begotten of her own body ten?
dollars.
Ninethly
I give and bequeath to my son Isaac a negro boy named Bennet, which boy he is to _ when he _ at
the age of two years.
Tenthly
I give and bequeath to my daughter Leah a negro woman named Hajar?, who is to take care of a
negro boy named Bennett bequeathed to my son Isaac, until he is two years old.
Eleventhly
I give and bequeath to my son David the first child that a negro woman named B? (bequeathed
then to my daughter Rhoda) _ her after _, which child he is to take as _ as of tow years old.. The
_ of my _ I _ (unreadable_ ) my children; and I hereby make and ordain my two sons Thomas and
Allen Executors of this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have said Thomas
GROVES have to this my last will and Testament, set my hand and seal, this day and year above-written.
Signed, Sealed, and published and dis_ by the said Thomas GROVES the Testator, as his last will
and Testament, in the presence of us, who were present at the time of signing and sealing
thereof

Sumner County Court November Term 1814
The last will and testament of Thomas GROVES was exhibited in Court for probate and the same
was duly proved by the oaths of William RONEY and Gilley (Gitty) GRAINGER subscribing
witnesses thereto- at the same time Thomas GROVES and Allen GROVES named in said will
qualifies as such by taking the oath of all Executors and prescribed by Law which is _ or _ to be
recorded. Whereupon said Executors and John W. BYRSON these security entered unto said
acknowledged this bond to the Governor in the penalty of ten thousand dollars conditions as the
law directs.
