As a number of men in Co. C, were from Sumner County we have included the entire company as there was no way of distinguishing the county of origin.
Their first active service was at Bowling Green, Ky. Then when the defeat of Gen. Zollicoffer at Fishing Creek, Ky., broke the Confederate line of defense this regiment retreated to Murfreesboro and onto Corinth, Miss., arriving their Feb. 27, 1862, and was engaged in the Battle of Shiloh, entering the battle with 406 effectives. It was commended for valor and leadership but no regimental record of casualties was given.
Next in line of duty was the Battle of Farmington, Miss., on May 28, 1862. Here Col. Allison was criticized severely and Major Bratton commended very highly.
Then followed Bragg's Invasion of Kentucky and the 24th was engaged at Perryville, Ky., Oct. 8, 1862, suffering 68 casualties. Then followed the Battle of Murfreesboro with 344 engaged suffering 79 casualties. Here Col. Bratton was mortally wounded, Lt. Col. Wilson was wounded and Major S. E. Shannon took command.
At Chickamauga, Ga., Sept. 19 thru 20, 1863, under the command of Col. John A. Wilson, the regiment suffered 43 casualties. Then they were sent to Sweetwater, Tenn., for a short time but returned in time for Missionary Ridge where they had 45 casualties. Then into the Atlanta Campaign under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston and the return to Tennessee under Gen. John B. Hood. On June 30, 1864, Col. John A.Wilson was in command of the regiment, but in July, Aug., and Sept. 1864, the commanding officer was shown as Lt. Col. Samuel E. Shannon.
In the engagement at Nashville in Dec. 1864, they were in the Granny White Pike area and formed part of the force under Gen. Walthall covering the retreat to Corinth, Miss.
Then to move to North Carolina to be again under command of Gen.l Joseph E. Johnston at the Battle of Smithfield, N. C., March 31, 1865.
By this time the original twelve companies were made into Co. F of the 3rd Consolidated Tennessee Infantry and as such was paroled at Greensboro, N. C., May 1, 1865.

Fuqua, James C. - In battle at Perryville, Ky. Then wounded twice at Murfreesboro. Minie ball entered groin and came out back of his hip. Wounded by minie ball in right shoulder. Left there when army retreating. Captured. Exchanged. Retired from active service and sent to Montgomery, Ala where he washed dishes in hospital six months then detailed as watchman at the Selma, Ala. in the Navy Yard.

Again notice the discharge of trained veterans and that a number of them went into other commands. Partly patriotism and partly because they could not remain at home. If discharged they were forced to take an oath of allegiance or go to prison.
