Capt. J. N. McKoin, farmer and stock dealer, near Gallatin, District No. 9, Sumner County, was born in Clarksville, Tenn., in December, 1842. He is one of the six children of John G. and Mary J. (Baker) McKoin. The father, of Scotch-Irish origin, was born in Logan County, Ky., in 1812, and a furniture dealer by occupation. In 1830 he moved to Montgomery County, and was a director of The Planters' Bank at Clarksville, and also alderman. He is now retired from business. The mother, of Scotch origin, was born in Todd County, Ky., in 1822, and died about 1876. Educated in Stewart College, Clarksville, Tenn., in 1861 he enlisted in Company E, First Kentucky Cavalry, Helm's regiment, and was made sergeant. After his year's time was out he joined Williams' battalion for eight months as private, when he was commissioned captain. After forming a company in Kentucky, he was at Fort Donelson, Brice's Cross Roads, Milton and Tupelo. He was wounded at Hewey's Bridge, and still has in his possession the ball that wounded him. He was captured at Brice's Roads in 1865, and was detained a prisoner until the close of the war, when he returned to Montgomery County and engaged in agriculture. In June, 1869, he married Emma S., daughter of Henry and Mary A. Lugg, born in Robertson County in January, 1851. Their three children were Lena (deceased), John G. and Henry S. in school. In 1879 Mr. McKoin bought 300 acres of land, on which he has since resided. He is a self-made man, a Democrat in politics and a member of the Masonic fraternity.
