William Hall, clerk of the Circuit Court of Sumner County, was born in said county, March 17, 1848, the only son of William H. and Sarah W. (McDaniel) Hall. The father was of Scotch-Irish origin, born in 1813 in Sumner County, a farmer by occupation. His father, William Hall (subject's grandfather), was born in Surrey County, N.C., in 1775, and when ten years of age moved with his father to Sumner County, near Bledsoe Lick, now Castalian Springs. He was one of the first white settlers of Middle Tennessee and became very conspicuous in State affairs. He was for five terms a member of the Legislature, also of United States Congress. In 1829 he was made governor of Tennessee upon the resignation of Samuel Houston, by virtue of his being at that time speaker of the State Senate. William H. Hall (subject's father) was a prosperous farmer and business man, and owned about 300 acres of land in Sumner County and 500 in Macon County, Tenn. His death occurred in 1883. His wife was born in Sumner County, January 8, 1828, at the village of Cairo on Cumberland River; was married in October, 1845, and became the mother of four children, one son and three daughters, all of whom are living. She died in February, 1882. Our subject was educated at Rural Academy, Sumner County. At the age of eighteen he became a salesman in a store at Christian Springs, where he worked two years, and then taught school one session. The following year he was in a hotel in Louisville. In June, 1872, was employed as teller in the Sumner County Deposit Bank, and remained three years, but failing health forced him to seek outdoor work, and he engaged in farming. In 1879 he gave up farming and engaged in milling in a custom flouring-mill on Bledsoe Creek in Sumner County, at what is known as the Lower Branham Mill. In 1881 he began the manufacture of ax handles; the next year he went to Dixon County, continuing in same business. May, 1884, he was appointed deputy circuit court clerk of Sumner County, and in August, 1886, was elected to the position which he now holds. He is an efficient public officer and thorough gentleman. October, 1874, he married Miss Mary, daughter of James A. Mentlo. Mrs. Hall was born in Sumner County on June 22, 1857. To this union have been born four children: Susie, Wincenna, James M. and William Alexander. Mr. and Mrs. Hall are esteemed members of the Christian Church. Mr. Hall is a Democrat, a member of the I.O.O.F. and the G.C.
